Decanter

From the team behind La Gaffeliere in St Emilion, this estate has streamlined its approach a little in recent years, still with plenty of Pomerol swagger but less dominated by oak than in its early days. A lovely choice in 2019 for an enticing, highly drinkable Pomerol with sweet black fruits and firm yet fresh tannin and acidity. Those tannins build across the palate, and by the finish you get a block of chocolate and liquorice, suggesting it will age well and deepen in expression.

Bettane+Desseauve

[ Primeurs 2019 Scores: 94-95 ] This 2019 is a blend of 70% merlot and 30% cabernet franc, with the latter grape bringing an airy lift to the finish, rounding off the silky, juicy twists and turns on the palate. A wine that is both sensual and refined.

Jean-Marc Quarin

Jean-Marc Quarin

Dark, intense, and beautiful color. Very aromatic nose with ripe, subtle fruit. Succulent palate, particularly hedonistic, with a melting, fragrant body and a fine, silky richness. Lovely juicy finish that’s impossible to spit out. Blend: 80% Merlot, 20% Cabernet Franc. Alcohol: 14.5% - pH: 3.6. Tiny production of 2,400 bottles.

Description

A fresh and balanced Pomerol wine

The estate

The story of the Château La Connivence is above all a story of friendship with three wine-loving friends who decide to create a "very good wine". The superb Pomerol appellation then becomes the cradle of this connivance that unites the three owners: Johan Micoud, former international footballer, Matthieu Chalmé, former player for the Girondins de Bordeaux, and Alexandre de Malet Roquefort, owner of the Château La Gaffelière in Saint-Émilion.

The vineyard

A garden vineyard, Château La Connivence is a real little gem: 1.40 hectares located on a very large terroir of Pomerol, emblematic land of merlot, the flagship grape variety that covers 65% of the estate's land. The château has also chosen to plant cabernet franc, which represents 35% of the vineyard. On this gravel terroir combining fat gravels, fine gravels, and clayey sand soils, the 3 friends immediately sense that the perfect conditions are met to be able to produce a very great Pomerol red wine. In order to preserve this precious terroir, the vines are exclusively worked by hand and managed using reasoned agriculture.

Blend

Merlot and cabernet franc.
