James Suckling

Zekun Shuai

Excellent depth and width of complexity on the nose showing a touch of cocoa beans, iron, mineral, dusty spices and blood oranges to the underlying notes of black plums, cherries and blackberries. Fleshy and carnal fruits on the ductile, full-bodied palate with a mouthful of polished, fluffy tannins and a long, melted finish. A real beauty from the vintage. Already enjoyable, but can hold as well.

I loved the 2021 Château La Connivence, a juicy, elegant, medium-bodied effort that has tons to love. Red and blue fruits, sappy tobacco, and a kiss of damp earth all define the aromatics, and it has fine tannins and the vintage's fresher, focused, lively style front and center. Drink bottles over the coming decade.

Lisa Perrotti-Brown

The 2021 La Connivence is deep garnet-purple in color. It springs from the glass with notes of black raspberries, Morello cherries, and redcurrants, leading to suggestions of wild sage and pencil shavings. The medium-bodied palate delivers crushed red and black fruits, with a racy backbone and lightly chewy tannins, finishing with a mineral lift.

Description

The elegance and richness of a fine Pomerol wine

The estate

The story of Château La Connivence is, above all, a story of friendship between three wine-loving friends who decided to create a "very good wine". The superb Pomerol appellation became, thus, the birthplace of this connivence which brought the three owners together: Johan Micoud, former international footballer, Matthieu Chalmé, former Girondins de Bordeaux player and Alexandre de Malet Roquefort, owner of Château La Gaffelière in Saint-Émilion.

The vineyard

Home to a vineyard garden, Château La Connivence is a real gem: 1.40 hectares located on a very large Pomerol terroir, iconic grounds for Merlot with the flagship grape variety covering 65% of the grounds at the estate. The château has also chosen to plant Cabernet Franc, which represents 35% of the vineyard.

On this gravelly terroir, which combines thick gravel, fine gravel and sandy-clay soils, the 3 friends immediately foresaw that these would be the perfect conditions to produce a very fine Pomerol red wine. To preserve this precious terroir, the vines are exclusively worked by hand and managed in sustainable agriculture.

The vintage

The year 2021 was marked by shifting weather conditions, with cool temperatures, frosts, a dull summer and significant mildew pressure. The sunshine and cool temperatures during September preceded a very mild month of October, which was ideal for refining the ripening process. The harvest was carried out in a plot-by-plot manner in order to harvest healthy and perfectly ripe grapes.

Vinification and ageing

Following manual harvesting, the grapes are sorted by density before undergoing a plot-by-plot vinification in thermo-regulated stainless steel vats. Alcoholic fermentation in vats, accompanied by pumping over and punching down, then malolactic fermentation in barrels. The wine is aged for 14 to 16 months in new French oak barrels.

The blend

Merlot (75%)

Cabernet Franc (25%).
