Vinum

En primeur, this wine was among my favorites; now bottled, that impression is confirmed: an intoxicating perfume, a mosaic of aromas that gives goosebumps, stunningly beautiful, deep, full of nobility and expression, profound, with violet, mocha, dark chocolate; the attack is straightforward, powerful, extremely dense in structure, with masses of perfectly ripe tannins, majestic and of seemingly endless length. Certainly one of the best wines of the year.

The 2022 Mouton Rothschild is one of the most muscular, almost brutally powerful wines of the vintage. Unfurling in the glass with aromas of dark berries, plums and sweet crème de cassis mingled with notions of espresso roast, pencil lead and petroleum jelly, it's full-bodied, dense and concentrated, with huge reserves of tannin and fruit. A blend of 92% Cabernet Sauvignon and 8% Merlot that represents 49% of the estate's production, this is a prodigious Mouton that's built for the cellar.

Decanter

Spicy liquorice, bitter chocolate, tobacco, cigar, and aniseed on the nose. Round and bright, with juicy, delicate fruit and velvety tannins. Super concentrated yet graceful, layering ripeness, freshness, and stoniness. Controlled power — soft in texture but packed with Cabernet structure. Starts juicy and creamy, then surges with depth and length. Sweet black fruit meets cool, steely minerality, giving complexity and definition. Black liquorice on a sticky finish. Bold for Mouton but outstanding, this is going to deliver for decades. 3.68 pH. Aged 100% in new oak.

Wow. The aromas here are so complete with blackcurrants, asphalt, violets, lead pencil, orange blossoms and black truffles. A perfect nose. It's full-bodied yet tied down with seamless tannins that run the length of the wine and give such a seductive mouthfeel and persistence. A vintage with one of the highest percentages of cabernet sauvignon ever. Quintessential, great Bordeaux with no limits. Drink after 2028.

92% Cabernet Sauvignon, 8% Merlot. Cask sample. Cabernet Sauvignon-dominated and it shows. Lovely cassis fragrance with a twist of spice. Palate truly amazing – suave, sensual but packed with polished tannin. Enough lift to provide freshness as well as light and shade. Powerful and clearly for the very long term. A modern 1986? (JL)

The 2022 Mouton Rothschild has a very expressive, floral bouquet that suggests Margaux, with fabulous delineation and focus. It just seems to billow from the glass. The palate is velvety smooth, with fine acidity and a touch of graphite infusing the black fruit. Restrained and, paradoxically, intense on the finish, this lingers wonderfully in the glass. Deeply impressive. Tasted blind at the Southwold tasting in London.

Deep dark ruby in colour with an opaque core, purple reflections, and subtle brightening on the rim. On the nose, a multi-faceted bouquet with black forest berries, fine cassis, cherry, delicate hints of clove and oriental spices, and sweet tobacco. The palate is full-bodied and juicy, with a pleasant core of sweetness, and silky but supporting tannins that give the wine great length, with a delicate hint of nougat, and mineral notes on the finish, a Vin de Garde that is already almost perfect today, but will continue to broaden aromatically. A promising future. (1/25, +50, PM).

Bottled in June of 2024, the 2022 Château Mouton Rothschild checks in as a classic blend of 92% Cabernet Sauvignon and 8% Merlot that was raised entirely in new barrels. Incredibly concentrated yet light on its feet and graceful, this inky-hued beauty offers sensational notes of cassis, graphite, crushed stone, and chocolate to die for. It shows the ripe, opulent style of the vintage yet brings remarkable purity, loads of tannins, and a gorgeous finish. For the tech geeks out there, it hit 14% alcohol, a pH of 3.86, and an IPT (tannins) of 76. It has the depth of fruit and texture to deliver incredible pleasure even today, yet it deserves a decade of bottle age and will evolve for 50–60 years. It reminds me of a mix of 2009 and 2010.

92% Cabernet Sauvignon, 8% Merlot, pH 3.89, 14% vol. An intoxicating, multi-layered bouquet of extraordinary finesse: freshly picked Morello cherry, redcurrant nectar, noble cassis spice, and menthol. On the second nose, alpine blueberry, graphite, and milk chocolate. On the regal palate, with a velvet-and-silk texture and wonderfully silky-sweet tannins, it uniquely unites dancing verve with extremely seductive charm and style; it is the Médoc wine that immediately rang the dream score bell of 20/20 for Editor-in-Chief Giuseppe Lauria. In a cascading, endlessly long finish with dark-berry contours, profound terroir spice, and elevated astringency. “The intensity of the old Mouton Cabernet-Sauvignon vines is the secret,” Jean-Emmanuel Danjoy sums up with a smile. It can only receive the top score. For us, this is the best Pauillac of the year!

Inky damson colour with vibrant violet reflections, a velvety texture, aromatics less exuberant than Petit Mouton, but the concentration and depth on the palate are absolutely there, with cocoa powder, grilled coffee bean, olive paste, cassis, and bitter dark chocolate on the finish as the tannins close in, set for decades ahead. This walks the line and is a thoroughly enjoyable experience. Clearly needs a long time before approaching: give it a full 10 years and then some. Harvest began September 1, earliest since 1893. Yield 32 hl/ha. pH 3.89, IPT 76, 100% new oak. Overall harvest September 1 to 26. Jean-Emanuel Danjoy, director. 49% of production in the Grand Vin, 27% Petit Mouton. 100% new barrels for ageing.

Le Figaro Vin

On the nose, it feels like venturing into an enchanted forest, where wild berries, bark, and sap mingle with fairies and mystical creatures, irresistibly drawing you into their magical realm. On the palate, it boasts striking breadth and length, sending a constant stream of hedonistic juice that wraps the palate in an intense caress. We’re close to perfection! Perfectly ripe, precise black fruits, graphite, velvety tannins, and an irresistible salinity that calls for another sip.

The nose is elegant, mineral, intense, racy, powerful and airy, with a very discreetly tight, intense, airy grain. It reveals notes of Boysenberry, morello cherry and, more slightly, racy warm gravel, combined with touches of violet and dense small fruits, as well as a hint of graphene, discreet hints of nutmeg, a subtle touch of star anise and almost an infusion-like freshness. The palate is beautifully guided, elegant, precise, deep, airy and chiselled, offering freshness. On the palate, this wine expresses notes of pulpy/juicy blackberry, bright blackcurrant and, more slightly, elegantly roasted raspberry and morello cherry, combined with hints of elegantly roasted fruit, as well as subtle touches of liquorice stick, tonka bean/chocolate and tobacco. The tannins are supple, elegant and silky. Good length. A beautifully chiselled wine, supple, gourmand, deep and perfectly balanced, crafted with great care. Superb persistence.

Black, purple, and brilliant color. Intense, refined, fruity, pure, complex nose. Swirling reveals blackcurrant over a creamy backdrop. A mix of freshness and warmth. Broad on the attack, rich mid-palate, complex, with a majestic carriage and extraordinary power of flavor, the wine melts across the deep palate—long and noble. The finish opens onto another world, endless. Blend: 92% cabernet sauvignon, 8% merlot. Alcohol: 14%. This is unprecedented. pH: 3.89 (on the higher side of average). IPT: 76. Low yield: 32 hl/ha. My highest score for this cru En Primeur along with the 2016.

The nose grabs your attention with its showy display of truffles, cigar boxes, spices, black and blue fruits, and dried flowers. However, it is the palate that steals the show with its ostentatious, flamboyant, velvet- and cashmere-textured display of red and black fruits. The wine keeps building in intensity as it expands in every direction across your palate. The seamless finish lasts beyond the 60-second mark, prompting you to take another sniff and sip to relive the pleasure again and again. This is a future legendary wine from Mouton Rothschild. The blend is 92% Cabernet Sauvignon and 8% Merlot, with an ABV of 14%. Drink from 2030–2070.

Dark chocolate aromas and a hugely dense tannic structure show a wine with great concentration. The small berries of the vintage give the wine intensity and power. It will age for many years, but drink from 2029.

Description

The complexity and richness of a Pauillac Premier Cru Classé

The estate

Baron Nathaniel de Rothschild acquired Château Brane-Mouton at auction in 1853. Located in the heart of the Médoc, in Pauillac, he renamed the property Château Mouton Rothschild. In 1924, Baron Philippe de Rothschild took over the reins of the estate. A visionary, he decided to start bottling the wine directly on the estate, while at the same time designing the label. 1973 was the year Château Mouton Rothschild became a Premier Cru Classé. An emblem of the Pauillac appellation, Château Mouton Rothschild has helped the great wines of Bordeaux to shine throughout the world.

The vineyard

Château Mouton Rothschild 2022 is a Pauillac wine from a vineyard located to the north-west of Bordeaux, in the Médoc. The vines are planted on gravelly soils that trap heat and release it during the night, helping the grapes to ripen. These poor, draining soils rest on a clay-gravel subsoil, giving Château Mouton Rothschild wines their unique power, elegance and tannic structure.

The label

It's a tradition that's nearly 78 years old: since 1945, the labels of each vintage of the Bordeaux monument are illustrated with original works. For this vintage, it’s Gérard Garouste, an emblematic figure of French painting, who lends his talent to Mouton Rothschild. Gérard Garouste, in his symbolic and dreamlike way, has designed a true Mouton Rothschild coat of arms, whose pediment is framed by a portrait of the baron and a ram, his well-known emblem. Created in the form of a gouache, this work was naturally titled Homage to Baron Philippe by Gérard Garouste, deeply inspired by the personality of the baron. He adds: "I wanted to pay tribute to this history, to his respect for wine, it is also a tribute to nature as it is given to us".

The vintage

The 2022 vintage was characterised by a hot, dry climate, albeit punctuated by rainy spells that recharged the soils. Despite the extreme heat waves, the vines adapted thanks to their deep roots. Flowering starts ten days early, and the grapes ripen in perfect conditions. Harvesting begins early in September, and the grapes are harvested with exceptional concentration and balance.
