Description

A complex and elegant Sauternes wine

The estate

An 1855 Premier Cru Classé of the AOC Sauternes, Château Suduiraut boasts 92 hectares of land devoted to vines. Bordering the vineyards of Château d'Yquem, Château Suduiraut is a 17th-century property whose gardens were designed by André Le Nôtre.

The vineyard

Château Suduiraut 2021 is a Sauternes wine produced from a certified High Environmental Value vineyard. The vines are planted in sandy-clay gravel soil. This well-draining and lean soil pushes the vine to stretch its roots deep into the terroir, resulting in wines with a strong character. The 35-year-old vines are cultivated according to the principles of sustainable farming.

The vintage

The mild and rainy winter favoured an early budburst. The episode of cold and frost, especially on April 7th and 8th, had an impact on 30 to 100%  of the vineyard, depending on the plots. The heavy rainfall recorded in May and June led to strong mildew pressure which caused further losses in yields. Although July and August were dry and relatively cool, the mild weather at the end of August and beginning of September was ideal and enabled the grapes to reach an optimal ripeness level, while maintaining a high level of acidity. The rainfall during the last ten days of September and the frequent fog led to the development of Botrytis. Despite low yields (4hl/ha), the grapes harvested between the 1st and the 27th of October in 3 selections showcase a great quality.

Vinification and ageing

Following a precise vinification process, the wine is aged for 16 to 20 months in barrels (50% new and 50% second-fill barrels).

Sémillon (100%).
