The Authentic and Structured Expression of a Saint-Julien Terroir
The Estate
Created in 1902 by Théophile Skawinski, Clos du Marquis occupies a singular place in the winemaking landscape of Bordeaux. Unlike the classic practice, it is not a second wine, but a cuvée produced from a distinct vineyard located within the Saint-Julien appellation. Belonging to Domaines Delon, the estate is today led by Jean-Hubert Delon, who took over in 2000. Under his guidance, the estate continues a philosophy centered on respecting biodiversity and showcasing this historic terroir, producing wines renowned for their consistency and authenticity.
The Vineyard
The 45-hectare vineyard is located on the western plateau of the Saint-Julien appellation, at an altitude of around twenty meters. The vines, averaging about thirty years of age, thrive on humic podzol soils resting on sandy-clay quaternary gravel. This distinctive terroir, surrounded by prestigious classified growths, benefits from a sustainable farming approach that limits chemical intervention in favor of soil health and natural biodiversity.
The Vintage
The year 2006 required particular attention in the vineyard due to the region's typical maritime climate conditions. The growing cycle called for precise management to bring the grapes to optimal ripeness. The harvest therefore took place over an extended period, from September 20 to October 6, allowing healthy fruit to be picked while adapting to the season's weather challenges.
Winemaking and Aging
The grapes harvested for Clos du Marquis 2006 undergo careful sorting before being transferred to vats by gravity, thus limiting mechanical pumping. Malolactic fermentation takes place in vats to precisely control this stage. Aging is then carried out using 40% new oak barrels, a measured choice designed to support the wine's structure without masking the expression of the fruit.
Grape Varieties
This blend is composed of Cabernet Sauvignon (44%), Merlot (41%), Cabernet Franc (13%) and Petit Verdot (2%).
