A Marlborough Pinot Noir combining elegance and purity at the heart of Clos Henri
The estate
Founded in 2000 by Rémi and Jean-Marie Bourgeois, the Clos Henri estate represents the New Zealand extension of the renowned Bourgeois family, historic owners in Sancerre and current proprietors of the property. Located in the Wairau Valley, within the Marlborough region, this vineyard spans 110 hectares. The brand stands out for its certified organic approach and its precision viticulture without irrigation. By combining Loire expertise with the unique terroirs of New Zealand, the estate produces wines renowned for their texture and great finesse.
The vineyard
The vines used for this Marlborough cuvée are entirely cultivated on the estate according to the principles of organic farming and without any irrigation. Aged between 10 and 20 years, the vines are planted at a high density of 4,000 plants per hectare and trained using the double Guyot method to limit vigour and concentrate the grapes, for a controlled yield of 7 tonnes per hectare. This unique terroir is divided into three distinct soil types resulting from the intersection of two glacial periods: Wither clays, Broadbridge clays and Greywacke stones.
The vintage
The 2024 year benefited from ideal weather conditions for the growing cycle. The season was marked by particularly dry weather, with rainfall limited to 374 mm, and warm days showing an average temperature of 13.2°C. From March onwards, a strong thermal amplitude set in. These climatic elements, combined with 1,386 growing degree-day hours, allowed for grapes of exceptional quality.
Winemaking and ageing
After a rigorous sorting of the bunches following the harvest, vinification begins by retaining 10 to 20% of whole clusters. The rest of the harvest is destemmed without crushing, then gravity-fed into large open stainless steel tanks. A week-long cold maceration precedes a natural fermentation. Extraction is carried out very gently through light pump-overs, without any punching down, for a fermentation and post-fermentation maceration that can last up to three weeks. Finally, the wine is aged for 11 months in large 7,500-litre French oak vats.
Grape variety
This cuvée is exclusively crafted from Pinot Noir.
