Description

Characteristics and tasting notes for the Langenberg 2012 Domaine Marcel Deiss

Tasting notes

Color
This white wine reveals a luminous straw-yellow hue, evolving into vibrant golden highlights.

Nose
The aromatic bouquet is particularly rich and nuanced. It opens with a pronounced minerality, accompanied by scents of citrus fruits such as grapefruit and fresh lemon, along with delicate white flowers. With aeration, more complex notes of quince, ripe apple, and dried fruits emerge, enhanced by touches of ginger and orange blossom that enrich the olfactory experience.

Palate
The attack reveals a texture that is both full-bodied, round, and wonderfully airy. The whole is supported by a refreshing acidity that energizes the palate. The tasting concludes with a persistent finish, underscored by a deep salinity and minerality, true signatures of its terroir.

Food and wine pairing

This cuvée pairs wonderfully with seasonal asparagus, whether served plain or topped with hollandaise sauce. It also pairs brilliantly with grilled fish, seafood, light white meats, or fresh goat cheeses.

Service and storage

Blessed with excellent aging potential thanks to its acidic and mineral structure, the Langenberg 2012 can be enjoyed now or cellared for drinking through approximately 2022.

Other characteristics

This white wine from France has a moderate alcohol content of approximately 13%.

The authentic expression of a great Alsace terroir

The estate

Officially founded in 1947 by Marcel Deiss in Bergheim, Domaine Marcel Deiss is a true icon in Alsace. Although the family's winemaking history dates back to 1744, it was under the leadership of Jean-Michel Deiss, grandson of the founder, that the estate gained international renown thanks to its innovative philosophy of co-planting and its transition to biodynamics. Today, Mathieu Deiss heads the estate, supported by his father, continuing the excellence across the twenty-six hectares of this exceptional vineyard.

The vineyard

Coming from the Langenberg cru located in the commune of Saint-Hippolyte in Alsace, this wine comes from a terroir with fascinating geology. The vines flourish on a steep slope facing due south, benefiting from optimal sun exposure. The soil, composed of granitic sand, is shallow, poor, and retains very little water. These demanding conditions push the root system to draw nutrients from deep underground, favoring maximum concentration in the grapes and heightened minerality.

The vintage

The year 2012 is recognized as excellent for the region. The growing cycle benefited from ideal climatic conditions, with a warm and steady August followed by a September that was both dry and cool. This favorable weather helped preserve the health of the vines while ensuring perfectly balanced ripening of the berries.

Winemaking and aging

True to the estate's non-interventionist philosophy, the Langenberg 2012 harvest is picked and vinified together, with no prior sorting of the different varieties. The process excludes any mechanical crushing, pumping, or chaptalization. The wine then undergoes aging on the lees in large traditional wooden foudres, before being very gently filtered at bottling to preserve its natural balance.

Grape varieties

This wine is the result of a co-planting combining Pinot Blanc, Riesling, Pinot Gris, Pinot Noir, Muscat à Petits Grains, Pinot Auxerrois, Pinot Beurot, and white and pink Muscat d'Alsace.
