Description
The authentic expression of a great white wine from Alsace
The estate
Founded in 1947 upon the return from the Second World War, Domaine Marcel Deiss is an emblematic figure located in Bergheim, at the heart of the Alsace wine region. This family estate spans approximately twenty-seven hectares across several villages. A pioneer of co-planting and biodynamic viticulture, the estate places great importance on allowing the terroir to express itself rather than individual grape varieties. Today, Mathieu Deiss leads the estate, passionately carrying on the family legacy while bringing a contemporary vision to these great wines of France.
The vineyard
Located in the village of Saint-Hippolyte, the Langenberg vineyard is rooted in a demanding terroir. The vines, replanted in 1997 at high density, thrive on a steep terraced slope with full southern exposure. The poor, shallow granite soils force the plant to draw its resources from deep below. This challenging terroir, cultivated according to biodynamic principles, promotes a slow and synchronized ripening of the grapes.
Winemaking and aging
The winemaking of this Domaine Marcel Deiss "Langenberg" 2022 favors a natural approach to preserve the freshness of the berries. The grapes are whole-bunch pressed before fermentation carried out by indigenous yeasts. The wine is then aged for about twelve months on fine lees in old wooden foudres, with no use of new barrels. Bottling takes place without prior filtration.
Grape varieties
This wine comes from a co-planting of Riesling, Pinot Gris, Muscat, and Pinot Noir.
Characteristics and tasting notes for the Langenberg 2022 from Domaine Marcel Deiss
Tasting notes
Color
Clear and bright, the color reveals a beautiful pale yellow hue enhanced by delicate golden highlights.
Nose
Lively and remarkably refined, the nose opens with notes of citrus such as lemon and grapefruit. It then reveals subtle touches of white flowers, reminiscent of lily of the valley and elderflower, underscored by a saline minerality.
Palate
The attack is lively, carried by a fine mineral tension. The palate offers a full and airy texture, revealing aromas of white-fleshed fruits such as peach and green apple, mingled with citrus notes. The whole is enhanced by a persistent salinity that extends into a long, fresh, and highly elegant finish.
Service and storage
For optimal tasting, it is recommended to serve this wine at a temperature between 10 and 11°C. It can be enjoyed now, but will continue to improve in the cellar and can be enjoyed until at least 2039.
Food and wine pairing
This white wine pairs wonderfully with grilled white-fleshed fish, seafood, or shellfish. It also pairs very well with asparagus-based dishes, light poultry, and fresh goat cheeses.
