Description
Characteristics and tasting tips for IDDA Etna Rosso 2023
Tasting
Appearance
This Italian wine reveals a beautiful red colour, reflecting its concentration and elegance.
Nose
The bouquet is warm and enveloping, marked by the intensity of a hot year. It exudes graceful floral aromas of old rose and honeysuckle, intertwined with notes of dried black cherries, candied citrus and cranberry. Subtle herbaceous touches of oregano and tomato leaf weave together with spicy nuances, juniper and graphite.
Palate
Supported by vibrant acidity and silky tannins with a fine grain, the palate offers a medium body of great fluidity. It unfolds flavours of red fruits, date, carob and tamarind, enhanced by cinnamon. The long, persistent finish stands out for its rustic minerality reminiscent of gunflint and volcanic soils.
Food and wine pairing
Ideal for accompanying Mediterranean cuisine, this red wine pairs beautifully with vegetable-based dishes such as aubergine parmigiana or mushroom risotto. It also enhances grilled fish, delicate seafood, as well as charcuterie boards and aged cheeses.
Serving and cellaring
This IDDA Etna Rosso 2023 can be enjoyed from 2025 and should be drunk until around 2033.
The elegance and minerality of an Italian red wine from the slopes of Etna
The estate
Located in the heart of Sicily, the IDDA by Gaja estate explores the potential of the southern slopes of the volcano. The name "IDDA", meaning "she" in the local dialect, pays vibrant tribute to the volcanic mountain, reflecting the strong identity of this 20-hectare estate.
The vineyard
The vines thrive on the southern slopes of Mount Etna, benefiting from an exceptional geological environment. This wine comes specifically from the Biancavilla plot, located at around 800 metres above sea level. This volcanic terroir, composed of mineral sands, gravels and lava deposits, provides excellent drainage. The high altitude ensures cool nights that preserve the acidity of the grapes, while the ongoing activity of the volcano regularly alters the composition of the soils, bringing a unique complexity to the fruit.
The vintage
The 2023 year stood out for its particularly hot climatic conditions. This weather, with its high temperatures, caused water stress for the vines, which favoured a strong concentration of aromas and flavours within the berries during their ripening.
Vinification and ageing
The making of IDDA Etna Rosso 2023 marks a historic milestone, as it is the first harvest vinified in the estate's brand-new cellar, located in Belpasso. Designed to use natural gravity and to optimise temperature control, this modern facility allows for precision work. The house philosophy combines traditional and contemporary techniques, generally favouring ageing that blends oak wood and concrete to develop the wine's texture.
Grape varieties
98% nerello mascalese
