The authentic expression of a great terroir from the Rhône Valley

The estate

Established in France in the heart of the Rhône Valley, this family estate was founded in 1481. Today, Jean-Louis Chave represents the sixteenth generation at the head of this historic property. The vineyard covers an area of 28 hectares, spread across the Hermitage and Saint-Joseph appellations. Renowned worldwide for its uncompromising approach, the estate favours meticulous viticulture and a deep respect for terroir. The excellence of its cuvées rests on ancestral know-how and a unique blending philosophy, placing the estate at the very top of the winemaking hierarchy.

The vineyard

Located on the left bank of the river, the vineyard of the Hermitage appellation lies on steep, south-facing slopes. The vines flourish across a complex mosaic of soils, combining granitic sands, limestone soils dotted with rolled pebbles, as well as alpine deposits and sand. The estate practises demanding viticulture, favouring manual work of the land, ploughing with horses, and the meticulous upkeep of dry stone walls, allowing the terroir to be fully expressed.

The vintage

2022 was marked by extreme weather conditions in the region. After a classic start to the growing cycle, a period of intense heat and exceptional drought set in from June onwards, with no significant rainfall throughout the entire summer. These scorching temperatures led to a particularly early harvest, beginning as early as August 23, while also creating uneven ripening depending on the nature of the soils.

Winemaking and ageing

The estate's philosophy is based on minimal intervention in the cellar. For this cuvée, each plot is vinified separately in stainless steel tanks and wooden casks, relying on indigenous yeasts and rigorous temperature control. Ageing takes place over approximately 18 months in barrels, with a measured proportion of new oak. The wine is then bottled without any prior filtration.
