Wine Spectator

Bruce Sanderson

This red is pure and focused, exhibiting strawberry, cherry, rose, earth and spice flavors. Linear, firm and shaped by racy acidity. A bit shy on the finish now yet should open nicely in a year or two. Best from 2027 through 2042. 400 cases imported.

Description

Characteristics and Tasting Notes for the Gevrey-Chambertin Village 2022 Joseph Drouhin

Tasting

Colour
The colour reveals a brilliant ruby red, reflecting a beautiful concentration.

Nose
The aromatic bouquet is intense and complex, blending notes of black cherry, wild blackberry and liquorice. Floral hints of peony and violet intertwine with subtle woody touches, promising an evolution towards spicy and undergrowth nuances over time.

Palate
Full-bodied and fresh, the palate offers a velvety texture supported by harmonious, non-astringent tannins. The balance is remarkable, extending the fruity aromas perceived on the nose towards an elegant and lingering finish.

Food and Wine Pairing

This red wine pairs wonderfully with flavourful meats such as a fine cut of beef or a traditional slow-cooked dish. It also perfectly accompanies game, roasted poultry, mushroom-based dishes, as well as characterful cheeses such as Époisses.

Service and Storage

To fully appreciate this Gevrey-Chambertin Village 2022, it is recommended to serve it at a temperature of 16°C. With excellent potential, it can be cellared to reach its peak between 2030 and 2035, and may even continue to evolve until around 2037.

The Elegance and Authentic Expression of a Great Burgundy Wine by the House of Joseph Drouhin

The Estate

Founded in 1880 in France, the House of Joseph Drouhin is an essential institution in Burgundy. This family estate, a pioneer of organic and biodynamic viticulture, oversees a vast vineyard of around one hundred hectares spread across the region's most prestigious terroirs. Today, the fourth generation leads the estate, with Frédéric Drouhin presiding over the executive board, joined by his brothers and sister. The house's philosophy is rooted in the pursuit of elegant perfection, offering wines that faithfully and delicately express the identity of each Climat.

The Vineyard

Located in the northern part of the Côte de Nuits, the terroir of Gevrey-Chambertin stretches across hillsides enjoying optimal sun exposure, at altitudes ranging from 240 to 380 metres. The vines thrive on complex soils dating back to the Jurassic era, composed of limestone and clay-limestone marl. This distinctive geology ensures excellent drainage and allows for deep root growth, giving the grapes remarkable minerality and complexity.

The Vintage

The year 2022 began with early bud break in spring, followed by ideal flowering. After welcome rainfall at the end of June, the summer season proved hot and dry. Timely rain in mid-August helped relieve the vines, before giving way to two weeks of dry, windy weather just ahead of a perfectly healthy harvest.

Winemaking and Aging

The grapes destined for the Gevrey-Chambertin Village 2022 are hand-harvested in small perforated crates, then meticulously sorted and fully destemmed. Fermentation takes place using indigenous yeasts in small open vats over two to three weeks, punctuated by traditional punching down and pumping over. After careful vertical pressing, the wine is aged in French oak barrels, of which 20 to 25% are new, for fourteen to sixteen months.
