Description
Characteristics and tasting notes of Joseph Drouhin's Vosne-Romanée 1er Cru "Les Petits Monts" 2022
Tasting
Colour
The colour reveals a deep, highly brilliant ruby hue, with remarkable intensity and a saturation typical of the finest Pinot Noirs from the region.
Nose
Particularly nuanced, the bouquet opens with dominant aromas of morello cherry, mingled with notes of ripe black and red fruits such as blackcurrant, blueberry and blackberry. With aeration, it reveals a lovely floral complexity evoking peony and violet, enhanced by fine spicy touches and surprising hints of muscat.
Palate
The attack is exceptionally silky, introducing a full-bodied yet fresh texture. The palate is structured by noble, delicate tannins, underscored by delicious spicy notes. The whole shines with balance, free of any heaviness, and stretches into a remarkably long finish marked by persistent fruity and mineral sensations.
Food and wine pairing
This red wine pairs ideally with flavourful meats of fibrous texture, such as quality poultry, patiently oven-roasted lamb or feathered game. It is also wonderful with a fine lean beef dish, a spicy chicken couscous, or pan-seared foie gras. As for cheese, it enhances soft, washed-rind cheeses with intense aromas such as Époisses, Langres, Saint-Florentin, Aisy Cendré or Cîteaux.
Serving and storage
This Vosne-Romanée 1er Cru "Les Petits Monts" 2022 will reveal its full potential when tasted at a temperature of around 16°C. Built for the long haul, it will offer an optimal drinking window between 10 and 20 years after its vintage, and can be cellared until around 2047.
The elegance and complexity of a great red Burgundy
The estate
Founded in 1880 by Joseph Drouhin, the Joseph Drouhin house is a true institution in France. Located in Burgundy, the estate now spans around a hundred hectares across nearly 90 prestigious appellations. A pioneer in environmental stewardship, the estate is certified organic and biodynamic. Currently led by the fourth generation, with Frédéric Drouhin serving as Chairman of the Executive Board, the house continues to uphold a philosophy centred on finesse, authentic expression of terroir and respect for the vintage, producing wines of internationally recognised elegance.
The vineyard
This Vosne-Romanée comes from a privileged plot of about 3.63 hectares, perched on a promontory overlooking the famous Romanée-Conti climat. East-facing, the vines benefit from ideal morning sunlight and the cool air flowing down from the surrounding combes. They thrive on a very stony clay-limestone soil, composed of oolitic and organic limestone, favouring a unique mineral expression. Farmed according to organic and biodynamic principles, the vineyard is planted at high density, encouraging deep rooting and naturally low yields.
The vintage
Regarded by professional critics as an outstanding year for the region, 2022 stands out for its generous yields combined with exceptional quality, a balance not achieved since 2017. These conditions helped elevate this harvest among the finest recent vintages.
Winemaking and aging
For this Vosne-Romanée 1er Cru "Les Petits Monts" 2022, the grapes are hand-harvested using perforated crates to perfectly preserve the integrity of the berries. Each plot is given meticulous attention and vinified separately before being incorporated into the final blend of the cuvée, in keeping with the estate's philosophy.
