Description
Tasting notes and characteristics of Corton-Charlemagne Grand cru "Héritiers Louis Jadot" 2023
Tasting
Appearance
The robe reveals a pale gold hue enhanced by delicate green highlights, a colour characteristic of the youth of this white wine.
Nose
The aromatic bouquet opens with floral and fruity notes, uplifted by touches of pepper and cinnamon. A mineral, stony framework elegantly supports the whole.
Palate
Full and concentrated, the palate offers a creamy texture perfectly balanced by a vibrant acidity. The mid-palate reveals a dazzling minerality that stretches into a long, complex finish, marked by flavours of peach stone, cereals, pine nuts and woody spices.
Food and wine pairings
This great wine pairs wonderfully with foie gras, whose richness will be perfectly balanced by the minerality of the cru. It also enhances noble shellfish such as lobster or crab, as well as poultry and veal served with a cream sauce. Fish in beurre blanc sauce or blue-veined cheeses also make excellent pairings.
Serving and cellaring
Although Corton-Charlemagne Grand cru "Héritiers Louis Jadot" 2023 can be enjoyed in its youth, it will reveal its full complexity after a few years of cellaring. It is best kept for optimal tasting from 2027 and can be enjoyed until around 2040.
The pure, concentrated expression of a great white Burgundy
The estate
Officially founded in 1859 by Louis Henry Denis Jadot in Beaune, the Louis Jadot House is a true institution in Burgundy, France. At the helm of an extensive vineyard of nearly 280 hectares, the estate has been owned by the American Kopf family since 1985. Today led by Thomas Seiter, chairman, and Thibault Gagey, managing director, the house upholds a philosophy focused on the authentic expression of terroir and a low-intervention approach to winemaking. Recognised worldwide, it also stands out for its growing environmental commitment.
The vineyard
The Corton-Charlemagne vineyard sits atop the hill of Corton, at an altitude between 280 and 330 metres. The house's vines, located in the Les Pougets climat, benefit from a prime south-facing exposure. They thrive on steep slopes with soils composed of chalky marls and limestone, with a very thin layer of topsoil that forces the roots to draw deep into the bedrock. The forest overlooking the hill provides a cooling influence essential to the balance of the berries.
The vintage
The 2023 year was marked by a relatively calm growing season, followed by a heat spike at the end of August. The white grape harvest took place early, under warm temperatures, delivering generous yields. The harvested berries showed optimal ripeness, a fine concentration of natural sugars and excellent retention of acidity.
Winemaking and aging
True to the estate's minimalist philosophy, Corton-Charlemagne Grand cru "Héritiers Louis Jadot" 2023 is given meticulous attention to preserve its freshness. Vinification and aging take place in oak barrels, with about one third new wood, for a period of eighteen months. The use of larger containers, alongside traditional barrels, subtly integrates the woody notes while allowing the minerality of the terroir to shine through.
