Description

Characteristics and tasting notes of Nuits-Saint-Georges 1er Cru "Les Saints-Georges" Domaine Louis Jadot 2023

Tasting

Appearance

The wine displays an intense red hue, adorned with subtle mauve highlights and a beautiful ruby brilliance.

Nose

The nose reveals an expressive bouquet blending aromas of ripe black and red fruits, such as cherry, strawberry and blackcurrant. These are joined by floral notes of rose, hints of liquorice, as well as nuances of sweet spices and roasted fruits typical of this sun-drenched year.

Palate

The palate stands out for its generosity and sturdy structure. The tannins, though present and vigorous, offer an airy and elegant texture. The whole unfolds with lovely juiciness and great aromatic precision, stretching into a long and lingering finish.

Food and wine pairings

This powerful red wine pairs wonderfully with characterful meats. It will enhance a roast lamb, a fine beef rib steak or a duck breast. It also goes very well with feathered game, or with soft-ripened aged cheeses such as Époisses or Langres.

Serving and cellaring

For an optimal tasting experience, it is recommended to serve this Nuits-Saint-Georges 1er Cru "Les Saints-Georges" 2023 at a temperature between 15 and 16°C. Endowed with a solid structure, this wine has excellent cellaring potential and will be able to evolve in the cellar for several decades.

Other characteristics

This vintage is characterised by a slightly higher pH and reduced malic acidity due to the warm climatic conditions, while retaining a balanced alcohol level of around 13%.

The power and elegance of a great Nuits-Saint-Georges wine crafted by Louis Jadot

The estate

The family's winemaking history began in 1826, but the Louis Jadot House was officially founded in 1859 by Louis Henry Denis Jadot. Located in Burgundy, this institution stands out for its model combining the activities of négociant and estate grower. The estate oversees a vast vineyard of 213 hectares, including 141 hectares in the Côte d'Or. Now led by Thomas Seiter, alongside Thibault Gagey as general manager and Pierre-Henry Gagey as advisor, the property upholds a low-intervention philosophy to express the authenticity of each terroir.

The vineyard

The Climat "Les Saints-Georges" is the most prestigious of the Premiers Crus of the Nuits-Saint-Georges appellation, in France. This 7.52-hectare vineyard is ideally located mid-slope, between 245 and 260 metres in altitude, benefiting from an east-facing exposure. The vines thrive on shallow, very stony soils rich in complex limestone, forcing the roots to dig deep to provide this Nuits-Saint-Georges wine with great concentration.

The vintage

The 2023 year was marked by historically warm temperatures. After dry months of May and June that favoured cryptogamic pressure, the growing cycle benefited from a cooler summer until the arrival of a heatwave at the end of August. These conditions allowed the berries to reach optimal and rapid maturity, delivering a harvest that was both abundant and of great quality, while preserving lovely freshness.

Winemaking and ageing

For this Nuits-Saint-Georges 1er Cru "Les Saints-Georges" 2023, the grapes are hand-harvested. After meticulous sorting, the grapes are destemmed. Fermentation takes place with indigenous yeasts, accompanied by a long maceration of about four weeks to extract colour and structure. Ageing then unfolds over 18 months in French oak barrels, custom-made by the Cadus cooperage, with moderate use of new wood to preserve the expression of the fruit.

Grape variety

100% Pinot Noir.
