Description
Characteristics and Tasting Notes for the Corton-Charlemagne Grand Cru 2023 by Louis Latour
Tasting
Color
The color reveals a brilliant pale yellow hue, enhanced by delicate green highlights.
Nose
Wonderfully complex, the bouquet reveals intense aromas of toasted almond and flint. It then opens onto notes of lemon zest, white truffle and acacia honey, subtly rounded out by touches of smoked hazelnut and marzipan.
Palate
Full-bodied and generous, the palate offers remarkable mineral tension reminiscent of a cracked oyster shell. It unfolds with delicious notes of ripe pear, peach, roasted chestnut and citrus fruit. The vibrant acidity perfectly balances the wine's richness, while the oak integrates with elegance. The exceptionally long finish lingers on nuances of chalk, beeswax and citrus zest.
Food and Wine Pairing
This great white wine pairs beautifully with noble shellfish such as lobster or crab, foie gras, as well as poultry or veal in a white sauce. It also pairs wonderfully with blue-veined cheeses and refined Asian cuisine.
Service and Storage
For optimal enjoyment, this Corton-Charlemagne Grand Cru 2023 should be served at a temperature of between 12 and 14°C, after allowing it to breathe for 15 to 30 minutes. With exceptional aging potential, it can be enjoyed from 2025 and will continue to evolve favorably until around 2040.
Other Characteristics
To preserve its aromatic purity and avoid any risk of spoilage, this wine is bottled using Diam technical closures.
The Excellence of a Great White Burgundy
The Estate
Founded in 1797 in Aloxe-Corton, France, the House of Louis Latour is a true institution in Burgundy. Now led by Florent Latour, representing the eleventh generation, this independent family business owns the largest Grand Cru estate in the Côte d'Or, spanning more than 28 hectares. Renowned worldwide for its excellence and respect for tradition, the estate stands out for a unique feature: it crafts every one of its barrels in its own cooperage. Its strong commitment to the environment is reflected in certified sustainable viticulture.
The Vineyard
The estate is the leading landowner within the Corton-Charlemagne appellation, with 10.5 hectares of vines ideally exposed to the south and southeast on the famous hillside. The vines thrive in complex soils made up of stony limestone, marl and clay, allowing for deep root growth. The vineyard is cultivated using sustainable methods, including the use of horse-drawn plows to preserve soil structure and promote biodiversity.
The Vintage
The year began with a particularly warm and dry winter and early spring, followed by welcome rainfall in March. After a stormy June, late summer proved mild. The cycle came to a close with an exceptional heatwave in September. To preserve the freshness and acidity of the grapes in the face of these temperatures, harvesting was carefully carried out during the coolest hours of the morning, wrapping up in mid-September.
Winemaking and Aging
The hand-harvested grapes are pressed directly. Fermentation of this Corton-Charlemagne Grand Cru 2023 begins in stainless steel tanks before continuing in oak barrels. Aging takes place over 8 to 10 months in new French oak barrels with a medium toast, all crafted at the estate's own cooperage. The wine undergoes complete malolactic fermentation and rests on its lees without stirring, before a final refinement in tank ahead of winter bottling.
