Tasted blind at the Burgundy 2011 horizontal tasting in Beaune. The Romanée-Saint-Vivant Les Quatre Journaux 2011 has an intriguing bouquet: black cherry fruit, blueberry, touches of licorice and aniseed just hovering off-stage not knowing whether to come on or not. Time will tell. The palate is medium-bodied with ripe, succulent tannins that lend this real corpulence. Yet there is not quite developed the complexity and precision on the finish compared to other grand cru 2011s poured blind in this flight.

Appearance
This wine reveals a deep garnet-hued robe.

Nose
The aromatic bouquet stands out for its great complexity, releasing seductive notes of blackcurrant intimately intertwined with hints of peppermint.

Palate
The palate offers superb tension, supported by tannins of great elegance. Intense blackcurrant flavours emerge, accompanied by delicate sappy nuances, leading to a vibrant finish of remarkable length.

Food and wine pairings
This Grand Cru will pair wonderfully with characterful dishes such as hare à la royale, duck parmentier garnished with truffles, or a Cîteaux cheese.

Serving and cellaring
To fully appreciate the complexity of the Romanée-Saint-Vivant Grand Cru "Les Quatre Journaux" 2011, it is advisable to serve it at a temperature between 16 and 17°C. Endowed with exceptional ageing potential, this wine can be cellared and enjoyed until around 2046.

Other characteristics

The estate
Founded in 1797 by Jean Latour, the Louis Latour House is a true institution in Burgundy. Still managed by the Latour family, the current owners of the estate, this prestigious brand oversees a 48-hectare vineyard, including 27 hectares classified as Grand Cru. The only Burgundian house to own its own cooperage, it stands out for its know-how blending tradition and modernity. Strongly committed to environmental preservation, the property practises sustainable agriculture certified to ISO 14001, ensuring wines of excellence that faithfully reflect the richness of their terroirs.

The vineyard
The "Les Quatre Journaux" plot stretches over 0.8 hectare in the south-west of the Romanée-Saint-Vivant appellation, in the immediate vicinity of the legendary Romanée-Conti, in the heart of the Côte de Nuits. The vines, averaging thirty years old, thrive on soils composed of brown limestone and iron-rich clay. Cultivated with the utmost care, this exceptional terroir benefits from entirely manual harvesting and boasts a controlled yield of 30 hectolitres per hectare.

The vintage
The 2011 vintage benefited from particularly mild climatic conditions favourable to vine development. This propitious weather throughout the growing cycle made it possible to achieve optimal maturity, giving rise to a healthy and perfectly balanced harvest.

Winemaking and ageing
The creation of the Romanée-Saint-Vivant Grand Cru "Les Quatre Journaux" 2011 begins with traditional fermentation in open vats, accompanied by 100% malolactic fermentation. The wine is then aged for ten to twelve months in 100% new French oak barrels. These barrels, with a medium toast, come exclusively from the Louis Latour House's own cooperage.

Grape variety
This wine is crafted exclusively from 100% Pinot Noir.
