Description
An intense red wine from Castilla y León with a rich aromatic palette
The producer
Located in the province of Castilla y León, Numanthia is a Spanish bodega created in 1998 and acquired by the luxury group LVMH in 2008. The name of this bodega refers to an ancient city whose inhabitants resisted the Roman invaders, preferring to die than to surrender. This tenacity is also reflected in this exceptional vineyard, which resisted both the phylloxera crisis and the extreme weather conditions of this winegrowing area.
The vineyard
Located in the prestigious Toro appellation, Bodega Numanthia watches over an 83-hectare vineyard. The vines are between 50 and 120 years old and produce fruity, powerful wines which promise an exceptional ageing potential.
The vintage
The heavy rainfall recorded in April and May preceded a mild summer which enabled the grapes to reach an optimum ripeness. The grapes harvested were of high quality.
The vinification and ageing
The harvested grapes are rigorously sorted and destemmed by hand. Cold pre-fermentation and maceration for 5 days. Alcoholic fermentation in oak barrels, with punching down of the cap twice a day for 10 days. Maceration on lees for 24 hours. The wine is aged for a total of 22 months, the first 6 months in a new Bordeaux French oak barrel and the following 16 months in a second fill Bordeaux French oak barrel. The wine undergoes racking every 4 months.
The blend
This Termanthia 2014 by Numanthia is a 100% Tempranillo, locally known as Tinta de Toro.
The tasting
Colour
The colour is a deep red with a garnet rim.
Nose
Intense and complex, the nose gradually reveals fruity (black fruit, blackcurrant, redcurrant), floral (violet) and spicy (clove, nutmeg) fragrances with aromas of tobacco leaf, thyme and rosemary.
Palate
A full and generous attack precedes an expressive and harmonious palate. The aromas of black fruits, violets and garrigue are combined with subtle notes of sweet spices. The finish is persistent and delicate.
Food and wine pairing
Numanthia's Termanthia 2014 is ideal with a semi-cooked foie gras with warm fruit on toasted bread, roast suckling lamb with crispy herbs or a dessert (dark chocolate truffle).
Service
For an optimal tasting experience, serve between 14 and 15°C.
