Description
The typicity of a Sicilian wine crafted on the slopes of Mount Etna
The estate
The Passopisciaro estate was founded in 2000 by Andrea Franchetti. After acquiring a high-altitude farm, this Tuscan winemaker set out to produce great Sicilian wines from a vineyard made up exclusively of old vines, some of which had survived phylloxera.
Located on the slopes of Etna, in Contrada Guardiola above the village of Passopisciaro, the estate tends 26 hectares of vines. Lying at an altitude of 1,000 metres, this exceptional terroir rests on a mosaic of volcanic soils that are particularly arid and ill-suited to vine growing.
Classified as IGP Terre Siciliane due to the altitude of the vineyards, Passopiciaro wines are unanimously acclaimed for their refinement and aromatic richness.
The vineyard
Produced since 2011, Passopisciaro's Contrada "G" Guardiola is a Sicilian wine made from century-old vines planted on the northern side of the famous Etna volcano, at altitudes of between 800 and 1,000 metres.
The vintage
2020 was marked by unsettled, rainy weather until the end of July, when conditions became milder. Rain in early August and September was followed by a more favourable spell during September and early October, promoting good ripening of the grapes right up to harvest.
Vinification and ageing
The hand-harvested grapes are vinified in steel tanks. Aged for 18 months in large oak casks.
Blend
This Contrada "G" Guardiola 2020 from Passopisciaro is 100% Nerello Mascalese.
