Robert Parker

Yohan Castaing

Crafted from vines planted on the eastern side of the Hermitage's hill, the 2022 Hermitage La Maison Bleue evokes aromas of loamy soils, mulberries, iris and dark berries, which intermingle with floral notes upon aeration. Medium to full-bodied, layered and concentrated, it has a fleshy, dense core of fruit and velvety yet abundant tannins, finishing with a charming, youthful and long finish. Fleshier and deeper than many Hermitage wines due to clay soils without granite influence, this is an enveloping and stunning Hermitage.

Stuart Pigott

In spite of its ample concentration and structure, this is an elegant and precise expression of Hermitage. Such a wide spectrum of black and red berries with grilled rosemary and smoke complexity. The ample fine-grained tannins build impressively on the finish, and they need some time to completely harmonize, but they are wrapped in enough richness to already be exciting. From vineyards on the eastern side of the hill of Hermitage. From organically grown grapes. Drink from 2027.

Jancis Robinson

Alistair Cooper MW

Cask sample. The nose is meaty, spiced, rich and gamey, bloody and ferruginous. A ripe and rounded palate with an opulent mouthfeel – firm and succulent tannins that are well integrated. The fruit is dark, meaty, gamey and spiced. A broad finish with moderate acidity and a dense, dark finish. Nicely balanced but a bit of a behemoth! (AC)

Vinous

Nicolas Greinacher

The 2022 Hermitage La Maison Bleue radiates marked intensity on its aromatic profile, mingling graphite, black cherry, blackberry, dried violet and cedar notes with a flicker of licorice. Hitting the medium- to full-bodied palate with lovely elegance, the 2022 achieves outstanding freshness. Generous yet focused, it winds down with a resonant echo on the complex finale.

The richness and expression of a great red wine from the Rhône Valley

The estate

An emblematic name of the great wines of the northern Rhône Valley, the House of Paul Jaboulet-Aîné was founded in 1834 in Tain L'Hermitage. The renowned oenologist and winemaker Caroline Frey has been running this illustrious house, owned by the Frey family since 2006. The House of Paul Jaboulet Aîné oversees a vineyard of 125 hectares of vines, spread over exceptional appellations such as Saint-Joseph, Crozes-Hermitage, Hermitage, Cornas, Châteauneuf-du-Pape, Côte-Rôtie, Condrieu and Muscat de Beaumes-de-Venise.

The vineyards of Hermitage and Crozes Hermitage have been managed biodynamically since 2017.

The vineyard

A place of work, rest and sharing among winemakers, this house with blue shutters is steeped in history. Located within the Hermitage vineyard, an emblematic terroir of the Rhône Valley, it is still used today to dry the plants used for biodynamic preparations but also the straw wine.

The wine

La Maison Bleue from Paul Jaboulet-Aîné 2022 is a Hermitage wine from a 13 ha vineyard located to the east of the eponymous hill. The 40 to 60 year old vines are deeply rooted in slightly stony and gently sloping soils.

Vinification and ageing

Hand-harvested, the grapes are sorted in the vineyard. 100% destemming. 3 weeks of maceration accompanied by daily pumping over. Malolactic fermentation before ageing for 12 months in French oak barrels, 15% of which are new.
