Jaboulet's 2017 Hermitage La Maison Bleue is flat-out sexy stuff, full-bodied, plush and generous without being overripe or unstructured. Licorice, cassis and Asian five-spice powder burst from the glass in a complex whirl of scents and flavors. Sourced from the eastern end of the appellation, it offers immediate gratification and admirable quality at a fraction of the price of the La Chapelle.

This is utterly delicious and has a very plush and sweetly fruited core of flavor with a sweepingly fleshy, rich and quite plush feel. The tannins are very fine here; sleek and assertive, they seem to suggest early drinking. It’s so balanced, too. However, this deserves to be reserved for later, as there’s a lot more to come. Try from 2024.

Formerly La Petite Chapelle (renamed since the 2015 vintage). Clean black fruit, heady minty notes, furry tannins and a touch of bitterness on the finish. Fairly light for Hermitage. (RH)

Vinous

Josh Raynolds

Glass-staining magenta. A complex, expansive bouquet evokes ripe dark berries, potpourri and incense. Exotic spice and mineral notes build with air. Sweet, focused and penetrating in the mouth, offering spice-tinged boysenberry, cherry preserve and violet pastille flavors that are braced by a core of juicy acidity. Blends concentration and energy smoothly and finishes with strong, gently tannic persistence.

Medium-bodied, fresh, soft, and fruity with ripe, elegant tannins, freshness, and sweet, ripe, dark plums on the finish. Drink from 2023-2035.

There are 2,000 cases of the 2017 Hermitage La Maison Bleue, which comes entirely from the more limestone and loamy soils on the eastern side of the appellation. Aged in 15% new barrels and demi-muids, it shows a youthful, fruit-forward, even sexy profile with terrific notes of black raspberries, melted licorice, truffles, violets, and bloody meat. It’s young and unevolved, with beautiful depth of fruit, and it’s undeniably better than many vintages of La Chapelle from the 1990s and 2000s.

Description

The refinement and complexity of a Hermitage wine

The estate

Paul Jaboulet-Aîné, the infamous reference among Northern Rhône Valley wines, was founded in 1834 in Tain L'Hermitage. The renowned oenologist and winemaker, Caroline Frey, has been running this illustrious house, owned by the Frey family, since 2006. Maison Paul Jaboulet Aîné watches over 125 hectares of vines that spread over exceptional appellations such as Saint-Joseph, Crozes-Hermitage, Hermitage, Cornas, Châteauneuf-du-Pape, Côte-Rôtie, Condrieu and Muscat de Beaumes-de-Venise.

The vineyard

A place to work, rest and interact with other winegrowers, this house with its blue shutters is steeped in history. Located in the heart of the Hermitage vineyard, it is still used today to dry the plants used for the biodynamic preparations and also straw wine.

Paul Jaboulet-Aîné's Maison Bleue is a Hermitage wine made from terroirs located to the east of the eponymous hill. The vines are between 40 and 60 years old and are deeply rooted in the soil, which is neither very stony nor steep.

The vintage

A particularly early vintage, 2017 was marked by budburst at the end of March, heterogeneous flowering and veraison before the end of the vegetative cycle. During a particularly dry summer season, stormy spells saved the vineyard. The berries are small, concentrated and have thick skins.

Vinification and ageing

The grapes are harvested by hand and sorted in the vineyard. Vatting for around 4 weeks with gentle extractions. The wine is aged in French oak barrels, 20% of which are new.

The blend

Paul Jaboulet-Aîné's Maison Bleue 2017 is a 100% Syrah.
