For eight generations, the family-owned estate Tasca Conti d'Almerita, has been producing fine Sicilian wines with an unwavering passion, rigour and with an utmost respect for the environment.
The friendship between the Tasca d'Almerita and Whitaker families has lasted for more than a century, but in 2007, they embarked on a new adventure.
Founded in 1975, the Whitaker Foundation wishing to promote the culture of Sicily, entrusted the Tasca Conti d'Almerita estate with the project of restoring and promoting the historic vineyards situated on the island of Mozia, opposite the famous Marsala salt mines on the west coast of Sicily.
With a rich history dating back to the Phoenician era, this exceptional 12-hectare terroir, which was ravaged by phylloxera and then replanted in the early 19th century, owes its uniqueness to its soil and microclimate. The lagoon surrounding the island ensures a salvatory thermal regulation during the hottest months. Thus, this open-air archaeological site benefits from ideal conditions which ensure the vine’s optimal ripeness.
Harvested with the utmost care, transferred by boat to the coast and then to the Regaleali estate in a refrigerated lorry, the grapes result in a white wine whose salty and rare aromatic brilliance enhance the full potential of the local grape variety, Grillo.
