A Japanese whisky from Kagoshima with fruity and slightly peaty aromas
The Mars Distillery, a pioneer of Japanese whisky
Founded by Kiichiro Iwai, the Mars Distillery has been producing Japanese whisky for several decades, its history marked by the closure in Komagatake in 1992 and the reopening in 2011, complemented by the launch of Tsunuki in 2016. Located in the mountainous region of Kagoshima on the island of Kyushu at an altitude of around 800 meters, Mars benefits from the warm climate of southern Japan and uses spring water from Mount Kurata. The company is also developing an additional warehouse on the island of Yakushima. Characteristic is the production method, blending whiskies matured mainly in first and second-fill Bourbon barrels and finished in Sherry and Port casks to enhance aromatic complexity.
The Tsunuki 2023 Edition, an expression of the Kagoshima terroir
This 2023 edition of Tsunuki perfectly illustrates the know-how of the Mars Distillery in southern Japan. Made from 100% malted barley, this Single Malt ages for at least three years mainly in first and second-fill Bourbon barrels and receives a complementary finish in Sherry and Port casks, which gives it its remarkable complexity.
The hot and humid climate in Kagoshima, which differs significantly from that of the Komagatake Distillery in the Japanese Alps, directly shapes the profile of this Japanese whisky and imparts an extraordinary fruity richness. The use of spring water from Mount Kurata and the medium peat content create a perfect balance between smoky notes and the fruity aromatic palette. Bottled in a gift box at 50% ABV and non-chill filtered, this Tsunuki 2023 Edition fully preserves its natural aromas.
