Description
Characteristics and Tasting Notes of the Pouilly-Fuissé Village "Haut de la Roche" 2022 Verget
Tasting
Colour
This French white wine reveals a brilliant pale golden yellow hue, enhanced by delicate green highlights.
Nose
Highly sophisticated, the bouquet opens with mineral aromas of gunflint and stone, harmoniously blended with floral notes of daisy, violet and lavender. It then unveils fruity scents of peach, pear and citrus fruits such as mandarin. On aeration, subtle touches of sweet spices, sesame and bergamot emerge.
Palate
The tasting reveals a framework of remarkable mineral precision, carried by fine tension and a refreshing acidity. The mid-palate unfolds flavours of ripe citrus, white-fleshed fruit and light honeyed notes. The finish, remarkably long, extends into a persistent minerality with a delicate peppery edge.
Food and wine pairing
This wine pairs wonderfully with white-fleshed fish such as turbot with beurre blanc, seafood, or delicately prepared poultry dishes such as chicken with rice or veal blanquette. It will also enhance fresh cheeses or pressed cooked cheeses such as gruyère.
Serving and storage
The Pouilly-Fuissé Village "Haut de la Roche" 2022 offers fine ageing potential and can be enjoyed until around 2035. It will benefit fully from a few years of bottle maturation to reveal its full complexity.
Other characteristics
This wine has an alcohol content of 13.5%.
The mineral expression and precision of a great white Burgundy
The estate
Founded in 1990 by Jean-Marie Guffens and his wife Maine Heynen, the négociant house Verget has established itself as a key reference in Burgundy. Based in the Mâconnais, the estate stands out for its bold philosophy: revealing the authenticity of the terroirs by breaking free from traditional hierarchies. Still under the direction of its current owner, Jean-Marie Guffens-Heynen, supported by cellar master Julien Desplans, Verget exclusively purchases whole grapes. This requirement allows for rigorous control over viticulture and winemaking, giving rise to wines of remarkable precision.
The vineyard
This wine comes from the Pouilly-Fuissé appellation, sourced from plots located on the upper slopes of the Roche de Vergisson, at over 400 metres in altitude. Facing south-southeast on steep slopes, the old vines, around 70 years old, thrive on very fine limestone soils resting on a chalky substrate. This configuration forces the roots to dig deep, giving the wine its unique mineral signature.
The vintage
The year 2022 began with a mild winter that led to early budbreak, followed by a generally mild spring. Summer proved particularly dry, but the high altitude of the plots helped preserve the freshness and moisture needed to withstand water stress. These conditions led to an early harvest, at the beginning of September, yielding berries of optimal ripeness.
Winemaking and ageing
For the Pouilly-Fuissé Village "Haut de la Roche" 2022, whole clusters are gently pressed to isolate the finest first-press juices. Fermentation takes place using indigenous yeasts in French oak barrels, of which around 25% are new. Ageing continues for approximately eight months, accompanied by regular manual lees stirring to enrich the wine's texture while preserving the pure expression of its terroir.
