Description
Characteristics and Tasting Tips for the Bâtard-Montrachet Grand Cru 2024 from Vincent Girardin
Tasting notes
Appearance
The wine reveals a beautiful golden yellow hue.
Nose
Intense and complex, the nose releases aromas of ripe fruit (apple, pear, peach, citrus) and white flowers, subtly intertwined with notes of sweet spice, minerality and toasty touches.
Palate
Full-bodied and structured, the palate captivates with its power and silky texture. Carried by lovely tension and perfectly integrated acidity, it stretches into a finish of exceptional aromatic persistence.
Food and wine pairing
This white grand cru from France pairs wonderfully with shellfish (lobster, spiny lobster), fish in sauce, poultry in a cream sauce or veal sweetbreads with morels. It also works very well with mature hard-rind or washed-rind cheeses.
Serving and cellaring
For optimal enjoyment, we recommend serving this Bâtard-Montrachet Grand Cru 2024 at a temperature between 12 and 14°C. Brief decanting is recommended while the wine is young. This wine is built for long cellaring.
Other characteristics
This vintage has been praised by critics, notably receiving a score of 92-94 from Neal Martin (Vinous).
The Excellence of a Burgundy Grand Cru by Vincent Girardin
The estate
The story of Vincent Girardin began in 1980 in Burgundy, when Vincent Girardin started vinifying his first two hectares. Now based in Meursault, in the heart of the Côte de Beaune, the estate farms a 100-hectare vineyard, 18 of which are owned. Sold in 2012, the house now belongs to the Compagnie des Vins d'Autrefois, chaired by Jean-Pierre Nié. Under the general and technical direction of Éric Germain, the estate stands out for its approach that respects the terroirs, producing wines of great precision that combine power, freshness and minerality.
The vineyard
Bâtard-Montrachet is a legendary climat located in the communes of Puligny-Montrachet and Chassagne-Montrachet. The vines, 50 years old on average, thrive at an altitude of 240 to 250 metres on gentle slopes facing south, southeast and southwest. The terroir rests on shallow soils dating from the Jurassic period, made up of alternating marls, marly limestone and stones. The vineyard is managed with great rigour, including Guyot Poussard pruning and meticulous canopy management to control yields.
The vintage
The 2024 growing season proved particularly demanding in terms of weather. Constant weather pressure required heightened vigilance and numerous interventions in the vines to preserve the health of the grapes. Despite these challenges, the teams' rigorous work made it possible to harvest berries of great quality, ultimately yielding balanced musts with excellent potential.
Vinification and ageing
The grapes for this Bâtard-Montrachet Grand Cru 2024 are harvested by hand, with rigorous sorting directly on the vine. After gentle pneumatic pressing and light settling, the musts are transferred into 228-litre French oak barrels (15 to 20% of which are new). Alcoholic and malolactic fermentations start naturally thanks to indigenous yeasts and bacteria. Ageing continues on fine lees for 18 months, with no bâtonnage. Finally, bottling takes place according to the lunar calendar, after light fining and gentle filtration.
Grape variety
This wine is made from 100% Chardonnay.
