Description
The complexity and intensity of a fine Pommard wine
The producer
The history of the beautiful Vincent Girardin house began in 1980. Vincent Girardin was born into a family that have been winemakers since the 17th century. At the age of 19, he began producing wine with the two hectares of vines that he had inherited from his parents. A winemaker at heart and a passionate one at that, Vincent Girardin quickly made a name for himself among the great names of the Côte de Beaune. Founded in 1992, the Vincent Girardin house has since become one of the finest references among great Burgundy wines. Since 2000, the talented Eric Germain has been following in Vincent Girardin's footsteps, passionately revealing the exceptional Premiers Crus and Grands Crus terroirs that surround Meursault and Puligny-Montrachet.
The vineyard
Vincent Girardin's Pommard 1er Cru "Les Epenots" 2019 is made from a plot located in the village of Pommard, in the south of the Côte de Beaune. The vines are 45 years old and are planted on very steep clay-limestone soil.
The vinification and ageing
The grapes are harvested by hand and then sorted, crushed and destemmed. Following a cold maceration for several days, temperature controlled fermentation begins with pumping over and punching down. Following pneumatic pressing, the wine is put into barrels, 30% of which are new, to begin the 15-month ageing period. One month before bottling, the wines are blended in tanks without fining and with only a light filtration. Bottling is in line with the lunar calendar.
