Description
Characteristics and Tasting Notes for Vincent Girardin's Pommard 1er Cru "Les Epenots" 2024
Tasting Notes
Colour
The colour generally reveals a dark red hue or a deep ruby tone.
Nose
Intense, the nose reveals aromas of black fruits such as blackcurrant, blackberry and black cherry. It is enriched with spicy notes of pepper and liquorice, complemented by hints of undergrowth, violet and ferrous minerality.
Palate
The palate offers a full, ripe texture, supported by lovely acidity. The astringency is balanced by dense yet supple tannins, leading to a lingering finish.
Food and Wine Pairing
This red wine pairs perfectly with grilled or roasted red meats, feathered game such as duck or pheasant, as well as dishes in red wine sauce. It also goes very well with full-flavoured cheeses such as Morbier or Reblochon.
Serving and Cellaring
For optimal tasting, it is recommended to serve this Pommard 1er Cru "Les Epenots" 2024 at a temperature between 15 and 17°C. This vintage shows good ageing potential.
The Elegance and Structure of a Pommard Premier Cru
The Estate
Founded in 1980 in Burgundy, Maison Vincent Girardin developed into a négociant house in the early 1990s. Located in the Côte de Beaune, the estate now farms around a hundred hectares. Sold in 2012, it now belongs to the Compagnie des Vins d'Autrefois, chaired by Jean-Pierre Nié. Under the technical direction of Éric Germain, the estate stands out for its "Très Haute Couture" philosophy. It favours viticulture that respects the terroirs, certified organic, along with minimal-intervention winemaking to reveal the purity of each climat.
The Vineyard
This Pommard comes from the "Les Grands Epenots" plot, located to the north of the appellation. Facing east-southeast on a steep slope, the mature vines thrive on stony marl-limestone soils, rich in clay and gravel. The vineyard is farmed without herbicides or insecticides, with deep ploughing, the use of natural compost and high trellising to encourage photosynthesis.
The Vintage
2024 proved to be a complex year, marked by constant weather pressure that required close attention and numerous interventions in the vineyards. Despite these demanding conditions, the growing cycle resulted in healthy grapes, allowing for the crafting of balanced and charming red wines.
Winemaking and Ageing
The grapes for the Pommard 1er Cru "Les Epenots" 2024 are harvested by hand, with rigorous sorting both in the vineyard and at the winery. After partial destemming and cold maceration, alcoholic fermentation begins thanks to indigenous yeasts in temperature-controlled stainless steel tanks, with gentle extractions. The wine is then transferred to barrel for 14 to 15 months of ageing on fine lees in French oak barrels, about 30% of which are new. Bottling follows the lunar calendar, without fining and with light filtration.
