Description

The indulgence and precision of a Red wine from Tuscany

The estate

The Ricasoli family, one of the oldest Italian families whose origins date back to the 7th century, founded the oldest wine estate in Italy. Indeed, in 1141, they acquired Château Brolio, marking the beginning of their commitment to viticulture. Aware of the exceptional potential of this terroir, the family undertook significant vineyard restructuring and modernization of viticultural techniques, aiming to produce wines of excellence from the Brolio terroir.

The Tuscan wines from the Barone Ricasoli estate quickly gained international renown, particularly when the Brolio wine won the gold medal at the 1867 Paris Exposition Universelle. After extensive research, Bettino Ricasoli devised in 1872 the “formula” of Chianti, today known as Chianti Classico.

The vineyard

This Tuscan wine comes from a 10.87-hectare vineyard planted between 1998 and 2000 at 320 meters altitude. Facing southeast, this plot lies on rich soil composed of Pleistocene marine deposits, including sand and, deeper down, clay. These characteristics, combined with excellent exposure, offer a unique terroir that gives the wine its complexity and structure.

The wine

The Roncicone Gran Selezione cuvée is one of three exclusive creations, made from a single plot and a single grape variety, produced by the estate. These Tuscan wines embody the essence of finesse, quality, and excellence of this renowned property.

The vintage

The winter was mild and rainy, followed by a warm and dry spring. The summer, marked by high temperatures and a lack of water, put the vines to the test. Nevertheless, they adapted and regulated their growth. Late August rains refreshed the atmosphere, favoring veraison, while ideal conditions in September allowed for optimal grape ripening, ensuring a high-quality harvest.

Vinification and aging

The berries are destemmed and then placed in vats at a temperature between 24 and 27°C to begin their fermentation. After a maceration phase of 14 to 16 days, this Chianti Classico wine undergoes 22 months of aging in 500-liter barrels, of which 30% are new oak and 70% in once-used barrels.

Grape variety

This 2022 Roncicone Gran Selezione from Barone Ricasoli is 100% Sangiovese.
