Characteristics and tasting tips for the Clos des Goisses L.V. 2001 by Philipponnat
Tasting
Appearance
An intense golden hue immediately reveals the richness and maturity of this Clos des Goisses L.V. 2001, a vintage patiently aged in the cellar.
Nose
The nose shows a subtle hint of evolution, combined with remarkable intensity and beautiful aromatic complexity. Acacia honey mingles with the freshness of bergamot, complemented by delicate citrus accents that lend vibrancy to the whole.
Palate
On the palate, the wine is intense and refined, both rich and perfectly balanced. Flavours of dried apricot, honey and candied citrus unfold with great depth, leading to a lively finish marked by notes of dried chamomile, a hallmark of freshness and elegance.
Food and wine pairing
This Clos des Goisses L.V. 2001 is an ideal companion for refined cuisine. It pairs beautifully with delicate, noble fish such as turbot or sea bass, enhanced by a creamy sauce, as well as white meats such as veal or poultry, served with mushrooms or reduced jus. Lovers of aged hard cheeses will also find a wonderfully harmonious match in this wine.
Other characteristics
This Clos des Goisses L.V. 2001 has an Extra Brut dosage, ensuring minerality, vivacity and purity. Late-disgorged just nine months before its release, it is one of the last 245 bottles of this vintage, an exceptionally rare lot presented in a numbered wooden case and offered exclusively through the House's network of Ambassadors.
Philipponnat celebrates the art of ageing with a generous and delicate champagne
The estate
Founded in 1910 in Mareuil-sur-Aÿ, in the Marne Valley, the House of Philipponnat now farms around twenty hectares of vines spread across some of the finest terroirs in Champagne. Led since 2000 by Charles Philipponnat, the brand belongs to the Lanson-BCC group, which has preserved its family identity and distinctive style. Renowned for its uncompromising commitment to quality, the House is particularly distinguished by its ownership of the Clos des Goisses, a monopole vineyard that has been its emblem since 1935.
The vineyard
The Clos des Goisses lies on the Mont de Mareuil, just east of the village of Mareuil. This historic terroir, planted with vines since the early 16th century and acquired by the House of Philipponnat in 1935, stretches 800 metres long and around a hundred metres deep, with a 60-metre difference in elevation and slopes ranging from 30 to 45%. Its full south-facing exposure, perpendicular to the sun, and its pure chalk subsoil allow it to retain exceptional heat, raising the average temperature 1.5°C above that of the rest of the region during ripening. This 5.83-hectare clos comprises fourteen parcels, including La Dure, Le Collet and Les Grands Cintres for Pinot Noir, and L'Écluse and La Croix des Goisses for Chardonnay.
The vintage
2001 is one of the most criticised vintages in Champagne, marked by an abundant crop, modest ripeness and one of the wettest harvests ever recorded in the region. At the Clos des Goisses, however, these difficult conditions were largely offset by naturally low yields and a unique exposure, which made it possible to reach a potential alcohol level of 10.5% before the rains, a level worthy of the greatest years.
Vinification and ageing
Very long ageing in the cellar, away from light and at an ideal temperature, for around twenty-five years. This extended contact with the lees protected the wine from oxidation until its disgorgement, which took place just nine months before its release. Most of this vintage was released some fifteen years ago, while the last 245 bottles were disgorged in March 2026, making up the very last, exceptionally rare lot of this Clos des Goisses 2001.
Grape varieties
This blend combines 60% Pinot Noir and 40% Chardonnay, reflecting the balance between power and finesse that is characteristic of the Clos des Goisses.
