Description
Characteristics and Tasting Notes for Château Cheval Blanc 2013
Tasting
Appearance
This red wine displays a medium-depth colour of great elegance. Its bright ruby hue gently evolves into garnet at the rim, revealing a lovely visual freshness.
Nose
Particularly open and captivating, the bouquet reveals great delicacy. It intertwines floral notes of rose and lilac with aromas of ripe red fruits such as raspberry and kirsch. Subtle hints of spice, charcuterie and fragrant earth add further complexity to this aromatic palette.
Palate
The attack is elegant and measured, introducing a medium body supported by remarkably fine tannins. The palate, both lively and delicately fruity, offers lovely density without ever feeling forced. The experience concludes with a mineral, earthy finish of remarkable length.
Food and Wine Pairing
This wine pairs wonderfully with delicate meats such as roast veal tenderloin, milk-fed lamb or pigeon. It also enhances mushroom- and truffle-based dishes, such as a creamy risotto, as well as mature hard and soft-rind cheeses.
Serving and Cellaring
Château Cheval Blanc 2013 is ready to be enjoyed now and will continue to evolve favourably, drinking well until around 2034.
The Elegance and Uniqueness of a Great Saint-Émilion Wine
The Estate
Located in the heart of the Bordeaux region, Château Cheval Blanc boasts a winemaking history dating back to the 15th century, although the estate as we know it today was established in 1832 under the impetus of Jean-Jacques Ducasse. Now owned by the LVMH group (Bernard Arnault) and the Frère family, with Pierre-Olivier Clouet at the helm, this legendary estate stands out for its independence, illustrated by its withdrawal from the Saint-Émilion classification. Driven by a deep commitment to agroecology, the estate cultivates biodiversity to bring out the unique identity of its terroir.
The Vineyard
Located on the border with Pomerol, this Saint-Emilion vineyard rests on an exceptional geological mosaic combining gravel, clay and sand. Planted at a high density of around 8,000 vines per hectare, the vines benefit from an advanced agroecological approach. The estate favours living soils through permanent cover crops, agroforestry and polyculture, fostering a resilient ecosystem and rich biodiversity.
The Vintage
The year was marked by a challenging climate and health-related difficulties that led to uneven ripening. Faced with these demanding weather conditions, the growing cycle required constant attention, resulting in extremely low yields and a particularly strict selection in the vineyard to retain only the healthiest berries.
Winemaking and Ageing
Château Cheval Blanc 2013 was crafted through highly precise plot-by-plot winemaking, made possible by modern infrastructure. Grapes from rigorous sorting are vinified separately to isolate the finest lots. The winemaking approach aims to preserve the purity of the fruit and the delicacy of the structure, with carefully controlled barrel ageing that accompanies the wine without masking its identity.
Grape Varieties
The blend consists of an almost equal split between Cabernet Franc (around 53%) and Merlot (around 47%), complemented by a tiny touch of Cabernet Sauvignon.
