Robert Parker

Neal Martin

The 2014 La Lagune is a wine that showed extremely well when I tasted it from barrel. Now in bottle, it has a very well-defined, quite intense bouquet with blackberry, cedar, and pencil box aromas—classic in style, showing impressive breeding. The palate is very well balanced with fine tannins, bright, vivacious black fruit laced with graphite, fine minerality, and it fans out wonderfully on the Pauillac-like finish. You know, I suspect this might even surpass the 2015 La Lagune... let’s see. This is excellent.

Decanter

The 2104 is closed right now – it takes a good 15 minutes to really open, revealing an excellent wine with layers of liquorice and dark chocolate alongside some crushed stones, with clear minerality on the mouthwatering finish. This is good quality. The tannins are now regularly taking on a weight that was less evident earlier in the lineup, even in bigger vintages, and this speaks to the extra work that La Lagune has been doing in the vineyard and the cellar. 50% new oak.

A red with blackcurrant and blueberry character. Hints of wet stones. Medium body, firm tannins and a crisp finish. Linear and classy. Drink or hold.

Tasted blind. Very deep crimson. Fluid – an initial impression of sweet ink and then some greenness beneath the ripe fruit overlay. Good attack. Far from perfect but should offer bracing drinking eventually. (JR)

Sweet tobacco, licorice, cedar and red stone fruits run through the 2014 La Lagune. Medium in body and silky on the palate, the wine offers lovely balance in an understated style. This is quite pretty.

Flowers, black cherry, chocolate mint and hints of vanilla create the aromatics. The wine is sweet, round and ripe with dusty tannins, fresh berries and cocoa in the round, elegant finish. Produced from a blend of 70% Cabernet Sauvignon, 20% Merlot and 10% Petit Verdot, the wine reached 13.5% ABV. 90-92 Pts

Deep purple-garnet, dense at the core, with lilac hues on the rim. The bouquet recalls a Chilean Cabernet, showing, within its floral sheen, a generous dose of eucalyptus and green peppercorns. On the palate it is dense, with fine tannins, focused, and shows excellent potential; the extract carries a peppery note, with the pedigree likely coming from the 10% Petit Verdot in the blend. When I arrived at the winery, the entire cellar reeked of rotten eggs. I hope this serious, ageworthy La Lagune 2014 won’t be affected by that!

Deep purple-garnet, dense at the core, with lilac highlights at the rim. The bouquet recalls a Chilean Cabernet, showing a floral sheen with a good dose of eucalyptus and green peppercorns. On the palate it’s dense, with fine tannins, focused and showing excellent promise; the extract carries a peppery note, the breeding likely coming from the 10% Petit Verdot in the blend. When I arrived at the winery, the entire chai reeked of rotten eggs. I hope this serious, age-worthy La Lagune 2014 hasn’t picked up any of it!

(70% Cabernet Sauvignon, 20% Merlot, 10% Petit Verdot) Mineral, silky, fresh bouquet, red berries, chalk, fine woods. Delicate, elegant palate with fine fruit, medium tannins, sweet, fresh aromatics, an elegant, finely muscular structure, and a fresh finish. 17/20 2020 - 2034

The 2014 La Lagune is medium to deep garnet-brick in color. Notes of fried herbs and baked plums lead to emerging suggestions of tobacco, cloves, and mince pie. The medium-bodied palate is chewy and a little thin, with a hard, rustic finish. Tasted blind with the Southwold Group in London in February 2024.

Supple and tender, yet with lovely elegance and, above all, fine-grained tannins. Already surprisingly seductive.

Le Figaro Vin

A very elegant wine with good structure, a fine Cabernet (70%) with Petit Verdot (10%), and 20% Merlot. Very pretty, very fine, very floral nose. The wine is supple, suave, charming, smooth, without the rough edges of the vintage’s tannins, all length and grace. A great success. 3–12 years.

Garnet red with purple highlights. What an appealing, seductive bouquet. It combines intensity and complexity. Fruity and spicy character. Notes of crushed raspberries, blackcurrant, cinnamon, caramel, and prunes. With aeration, the wine gains in fruity intensity. An elegant, dense, fruity attack. The body is unctuous and perfectly balanced. The acidic structure provides excellent support, bringing fruit and sustaining the finish. The tannins emerge slowly at the end of the palate. They are perfectly integrated and in tune with the structure. A great success that once again highlights the elegant, refined character of La Lagune. Bravo.

During my latest tastings, I was comparing La Lagune to a Margaux. 2014 reinforces that feeling and even more! Dark, intense, beautiful color. Fine nose, fruity and floral with hints of black fruit. Lovely, fleshy entry on the palate, and the wine unfolds very perfumed on a velvety, melting body with classy texture. Beautiful sappy, fragrant finish. Fine tannin. Bravo!

Description

A particularly delicious Haut-Médoc red wine

The estate

Presiding over the Left Bank of Bordeaux, Château La Lagune is one of the most splendid estates of the Haut-Médoc appellation.  Caroline Frey has, since 2004, put her talent to work to elevate Château la Lagune to the top.

The vineyard

Château La Lagune is a Haut-Médoc wine that stems from a vineyard of 80 hectares planted on a gravelly hillside. The vines are worked on biological and biodynamic agricultural practices.

The vintage

The harvests began on 22 September (on the young merlot plots) to finish on 13 October, having gathered a yield of gorgeous petit verdot and sumptuous cabernet sauvignon. The winemaking process rapidly showed promise with the aromatic intensity of the musts and the first phenolic analyses.

Blend

Merlot
Cabernet sauvignon
Petit verdot.
