Description

Characteristics and Tasting Notes for the 2022 Moulin-à-Vent "En Mortperay" Domaine from Domaine A.F. Gros

Tasting

Colour
This French red wine displays a deep ruby hue with violet highlights, gently evolving towards garnet. Its dense colour reflects a fine concentration derived from its terroir.

Nose
The bouquet reveals itself to be sophisticated and complex, unveiling aromas of red and black fruits such as cherry, raspberry and blueberry. Floral notes of crushed violet and iris intertwine with subtle touches of white pepper, cocoa and wild herbs, all underscored by a delicate mineral imprint.

Palate
The attack is generous and supple, introducing a silky, velvety texture. The structure rests on elegant, finely integrated tannins. A lovely natural liveliness enlivens the palate, carrying persistent flavours of fresh fruit through to a long finish marked by a mineral salinity, with no heavy woody notes.

Food and wine pairing

This cuvée pairs beautifully with roasted or grilled red meats, such as roast lamb or duck confit. It also wonderfully accompanies herb-roasted poultry, fine cured meats and aged cheeses such as Comté or Crottin de Chavignol. Its freshness also allows it to elevate lightly spiced Asian dishes or Mediterranean recipes.

Service and storage

It is recommended to serve the 2022 Moulin-à-Vent "En Mortperay" Domaine at a temperature between 14 and 16°C. A brief decanting of fifteen to thirty minutes before tasting will allow it to open up fully. Approachable now, this wine has excellent aging potential and can be cellared for enjoyment until around 2032.

The Authentic Expression of Beaujolais by Domaine A.F. Gros

The estate

Founded in 1988 by Anne-Françoise Gros and François Parent, Domaine A.F. Gros is an emblematic figure of Burgundy, historically established in Vosne-Romanée and based in Pommard. Now run by their children, Caroline and Mathias Parent, the estate continues a family tradition of expertise while embracing measured innovation. In 2017, the estate expanded its horizons by acquiring vines in Beaujolais, illustrating its desire to explore new terroirs. Favouring sustainable, environmentally respectful viticulture, the estate produces wines renowned for their finesse and authenticity.

The vineyard

Acquired in 2017, the "En Mortperay" plot is located within the Moulin-à-Vent appellation. This distinctive terroir stands out for its pink granite soils threaded with veins of manganese, promoting a fine concentration in the grapes. The vines, aged thirty, fifty and seventy-five years, thrive on a gently sloping hillside facing southwest. This ideal exposure ensures generous sunlight while protecting the vines from cold continental winds, allowing for optimal ripening of the berries.

The vintage

The year 2022 stood out for its early ripening and remarkable sunshine. Following a mild winter and a gentle spring that allowed for a harmonious flowering, the summer proved particularly hot and dry. Despite very high temperatures in August, the terroir's characteristics allowed the vines to withstand the conditions, resulting in an early harvest in mid-August. The grapes harvested showed perfect health and ideal ripeness while retaining a lovely acidity.

Winemaking and aging

The grapes are hand-harvested, followed by rigorous sorting. For the 2022 Moulin-à-Vent "En Mortperay" Domaine, the winemaking process combines carbonic maceration with about a third whole-bunch fermentation, promoting aromatic freshness. Fermentation takes place in concrete vats over roughly two weeks. The wine is then aged for about sixteen months in French oak barrels. The choice of barrels is carefully tailored to preserve the wine's fruit brightness and natural liveliness, without overly marking its aromatic profile.
