Wine Spectator

Kristen Bieler

Delicious and ripe, with density to its persimmon, melon and zesty peach notes, all married to an intense layer of crushed flint and smoke. Clementine acidity and white tea accents wash through and clean up the finish, dusted in sea salt and savory smoked thyme. Mineral-rich and long. Drink now through 2029. 220 cases imported.

Description

A great white wine from Loire, originating from the prestigious Chavignol terroir

The property

Founded in 1310, the family estate is a pillar of Chavignol in the heart of the Loire. Gérard Boulay, supported by his son Thibaut, perpetuates a centuries-old viticultural tradition on 14 hectares of prestigious terroirs such as the Monts Damnés. Since 1990, the estate has been practicing organic farming, enhancing old vines and minimalist winemaking. This artisanal approach, without new barrels, highlights the minerality and complexity of the Kimmeridgian soils, making their wines an undeniable reference.

The vineyard

The Clos de Beaujeu represents one of the historic grand crus of Chavignol in Sancerre. The Boulay estate owns a third of the original Clos, facing south-southeast. This steeply sloping plot rests on Kimmeridgian marls, an exceptional terroir that is very difficult to cultivate but produces wines of remarkable depth and structure. The vines, averaging 70 years old, benefit from deep rooting that allows them to capture all the mineral richness of the soil.

Vinification and aging

The aging takes place in 300-liter barrels on fine lees without stirring, without the use of new wood, thus allowing the wine to fully express its original terroir.

Grape variety

This Clos de Beaujeu 2023 from Gérard Boulay is a 100% Sauvignon Blanc.
