Wine Spectator

Kristen Bieler

An impressive, substantial Sancerre, with just a hint of toasty brioche adding a touch of delicious opulence, but this is mostly about freshness and elegance, with dried herb oil, chives, and a saline beam of energy on a well-integrated frame. This serious, weighty Sancerre is built for the table and for the cellar. Drink now through 2030. 170 cases imported.

Vinous

Rebecca Gibb, MW

This 2023 Monts Damnés is a young, firm expression with a hint of spritz. Initially it expands in the mouth before tying up on the midpalate and finish. It is intensely chalky and mineral, with a youthful austerity and an almost spicy edge to its lemon and honey tea notes. This will take some time to come around but then what do you expect from Monts Damnés?

Description

A lively and aromatic white wine from Loire

The estate

Founded in 1310, the family estate is a pillar of Chavignol in the heart of the Loire. Gérard Boulay, supported by his son Thibaut, perpetuates a centuries-old viticultural tradition on 14 hectares of prestigious terroirs such as the Monts Damnés. Since 1990, the estate has been practicing organic farming, enhancing old vines and minimalist winemaking. This artisanal approach, without new barrels, highlights the minerality and complexity of the Kimmeridgian soils, making their wines an essential reference.

The vineyard

The Monts Damnés, like the Clos de Beaujeu and the Côte d’Amigny, illustrate a mosaic terroir where the plots, differentiated since Antiquity, express specific nuances. The Kimmeridgian marl soils, locally called "white lands", are full of small fossilized oysters, like those found in Chablis. Cultivated since 1982, this Sancerre vineyard with vines averaging 45 years old, benefits from a full southern exposure.

Vinification and aging

Hand harvesting. Vinification in vats with indigenous yeasts, followed by aging on fine lees in 300-liter barrels without stirring or new wood.

Grape variety

The Monts Damnés 2023 cuvée from Gérard Boulay is a 100% sauvignon blanc.
