Description

Characteristics and tasting recommendations of Grattamacco 2020

Tasting

Nose
The nose is generous with ripe dark fruit notes, notably blackcurrant and wild berries. Balsamic notes and Mediterranean scrub accompany this fruity expression, enriched by characteristic mineral touches.

Palate
On the palate, the wine displays a lively, crunchy acidity perfectly balanced with enveloping tannins. Broad minerality structures the whole, leading to a finish of remarkable crisp freshness that attests to an exceptional aging potential.

Service and cellaring

The Grattamacco 2020 can be enjoyed now but will continue to evolve until around 2045.

A full-bodied Toscane wine with silky tannins

The estate
Created in 1977 by Piermario Meletti Cavallari, Grattamacco is among the first two estates established in Bolgheri in Toscane. Acquired in 2002 by Claudio Tipa and the Tipa Bertarelli family, current owners, the estate covers around 28 hectares of vineyards at 100 meters of elevation. A pioneer of the appellation, Grattamacco was the first to vinify a Bolgheri Rosso in 1994 and to introduce Sangiovese and Vermentino to the region. The vineyards produce their wines on exceptional white clay and flysch soils.

The vineyard
This Bolgheri Superiore comes from vineyards planted between 100 and 200 meters in altitude, benefiting from a Mediterranean climate tempered by frequent sea breezes. The soils consist of limestone sandstone, white clays and fossil-rich marls. The 25-year-old vines, managed with low yields, are hand-harvested with a rigorous qualitative selection.

The vintage
The 2020 vintage in Toscane was marked by late August rains that promoted balanced ripening. Harvest conditions proved ideal with mild weather, intense sunshine and significant temperature variations between day and night. This rapid and uniform ripening led to a harvest completed on September 22, just before heavy rainfall arrived.

Winemaking and aging
After hand-harvesting, the Grattamacco 2020 is vinified in open oak vats with manual punch-downs and extended maceration. The aging of this Bolgheri Superiore wine takes place over 18 months in small oak barrels.

Grape varieties
Cabernet sauvignon (65%), Merlot (20%) and Sangiovese (15%).
