Julienas Wines : Key Points

Inspired by Julius Caesar's occupation of the Beaujolais region in the 1st century BC, Juliénas is one of the most famous wines of the region. This appellation has been recognised as an AOC since 1938.

On the borders of the Beaujolais, Juliénas borders the Mâconnais, covering the southern and south-western sides of the Mont de Bessay. The rolling hillsides and rocky ridges form the landscape of this vineyard of nearly 580 hectares. The appellation covers the communes of Juliénas, Pruzilly, Émeringes and Jullié at the crossroads of the Rhône and Saône-et-Loire.

The granitic and alluvial soils make up the land that nourishes the appellation’s Gamay vines. Gamay is the main grape variety in the vineyard but three other varieties are allowed on the plots. Aligoté, Chardonnay and Melon de Bourgogne can grow on this Beaujolais terroir.

The continental climate is characterised by cold, dry winters influenced by the north winds. These winds can bring some late frosts, which are detrimental to the Gamays. The orientation of the vineyard allows for maximum sunshine.

The wines of Juliénas are characterised by a beautiful deep ruby colour. The nose is floral and fruity with notes of peach and red fruits. It is a vigorous, robust wine. It can be enjoyed both young and after a few years of ageing.
