Description
The typicality of a fine Tuscan wine by La Massa
The estate
La Massa, a wine estate since 1400, was acquired in 1992 by Gian Paolo Motta, who was passionate about the finest Bordeaux wines. Gian Paolo Motta was eager to make this estate an essential reference point among fine Italian wines. Located in Panzano, near the Conca d'Oro, La Massa produces IGT Toscana wines that are renowned for their quality and great finesse.
The vineyard
La Massa is a fine Tuscan wine that stems from a 25-hectare vineyard. Poised at an altitude of 360 metres, this vineyard enjoys a southern exposure in the Panzano winegrowing area. The estate's uniqueness lies in its tapestry of terroirs that are spread over three geological levels, including chalky-clay, marly with a scaly fracture (galestro) and clay soils.
The vintage
A mild and relatively dry winter preceded a wet spring with mild temperatures, which favoured a regular start to the vegetative cycle. The hot summer was punctuated by rainy spells, ideal conditions for a gradual and optimal ripening process. As the grape-harvest drew closer, the alternation between hot days and cool nights helped to preserve the finesse and aromatic freshness of the grapes. This vintage gave rise to a perfectly balanced wine that showcased a good concentration.
Vinification and ageing
Aged in French oak barrels (20% new oak) of which 10 months are spent in contact with the fine lees, along with regular stirring of the lees.
The blend
Sangiovese (50%)
Merlot (30%)
Cabernet Sauvignon, Alicante Bouschet and Petit Verdot (20%).
