The expression of a great traditional white wine from La Rioja

The estate

Officially founded in 1877 by Don Rafael López de Heredia, the bodega has established itself as a true institution in Haro, in the region of La Rioja. Today, the fourth generation, brilliantly represented by María José and Mercedes López de Heredia, runs this historic 170-hectare estate. Faithful to artisanal methods and long ageing periods, the property has elevated its brand to the pinnacle of world winemaking. This family estate stands out for its fierce determination to preserve a unique traditional style, producing wines of exceptional longevity.

The vineyard

The grapes come exclusively from the Viña Zaconia plot, a 24-hectare terroir located a few hundred metres from the winery, near the banks of the Ebro in Rioja Alta. The vines, around 45 years old, thrive on this vineyard of plains and gentle slopes. This privileged geographical location allows for moderate yields and optimal berry concentration, ideal for crafting wines built for long ageing.

The vintage

2018 was marked by capricious weather, with heavy rainfall in late spring and early summer. While the mid-May frost and violent hailstorms in July caused some damage and encouraged mildew pressure, meticulous work in the vineyards helped keep the sanitary conditions under control. The return of mild, settled weather in August saved the season, resulting in a generous and high-quality harvest. The white grape harvest began on 24 September.

Winemaking and ageing

The making of Vina Gravonia 2018 is based on traditional methods and a particularly long maturation period. The wine benefits from four years of ageing in oak barrels. During this period, it is racked twice a year and fined with fresh egg whites. Finally, it is bottled without any prior filtration, before continuing its slow ageing in the cellar for several years before release.
