Wine Spectator

Bruce Sanderson

Though powerful and dense, this red is reluctant to show all its facets today. Darker in tone than many of its brethren, offering black cherry, blackberry and earth flavors, with a muscular structure that leaves a strong grip on the finish. Best from 2027 through 2043. 135 cases imported.

James Suckling

Perfumed nose of cloves, dried roses, rosemary and small red berry fruit. It’s medium-bodied, wonderfully silky in texture, with fragrance and elegance and fine tannins. Delicious and moreish. Drink or hold.

Description

A fruity and balanced Beaune Premier Cru wine

The estate

Established since 1859, Maison Louis Jadot is a true benchmark in Burgundy. Its business began with the acquisition of the Beaune Premier Cru "Clos des Ursules" en 1826in 1826. Its trading activity led to its swift international recognition. The owner of prestigious vineyards, Maison Louis Jadot keeps alive a know-how passed down from generation to generation by offering wine lovers the very best of Burgundy.

At the head of Maison Louis Jadot since 1992, Pierre-Henry Gagey entrusted his position to Thomas Seiter (Bouchard Père et Fils) and the General Management to his son Thibault Gagey in September 2022.

The vineyard

This Premier Cru "Clos des Ursules" Monopole 2021 from the Domaine des Héritiers Louis Jadot is a Beaune wine stemming from a vineyard located between Savigny-lès-Beaune in the north of the appellation and Pommard in the south – one of the most sprawling estates in the Côte de Beaune. Acquired in 1826 by Louis Jadot, the "Clos des Ursules" is a walled micro-plot in the heart of the Beaune Premier Cru "Les Vignes Franches."

The vintage

2021 was a year marked by severe frost at the beginning of April in Burgundy and unstable weather conditions throughout the year in Burgundy. Despite a below-average harvest, the quality is reflected through the floral and well-balanced white wines as well as vibrant, full and aromatic red wines.

Winemaking and ageing

Following the harvest, the groups were carefully destemmed and vinified in open vats over four weeks. After being drawn off, the wines were funneled into oak casks in the estate’s cellars for an ageing period of 18 months.
