Description
Characteristics and tasting notes of the Chambertin-Clos de Bèze Grand Cru 2023 by Louis Jadot
Tasting
Appearance
Red in colour, this wine reveals a robe with deep ruby hues, stretching to black cherry reflections.
Nose
Powerful and refined, the aromatic bouquet expresses scents of black cherry, wild berries and dark chocolate, complemented by secondary notes of undergrowth, spices and earth.
Palate
The attack is ample and firm, supported by a fine tannic structure and balanced acidity. The tannins are noble, refined and velvety. A mineral backbone adds complexity, leading to a lingering finish on aromas of fresh red fruits, sweet spices and minerality.
Food and wine pairings
This Grand Cru pairs wonderfully with rich, flavourful dishes. It will enhance feathered game in wine sauce, roast lamb, glazed poultry or a fine rib steak. When it comes to cheese, favour soft-rind varieties with aromas of mushrooms or undergrowth.
Serving and cellaring
The Chambertin-Clos de Bèze Grand Cru 2023 reveals its full potential after a few years in the cellar. It is advisable to wait around five years before opening it, and it can be kept until around 2053, depending on storage conditions.
The authentic expression of a Burgundy Grand Cru by Maison Louis Jadot
The estate
Founded in 1859 by Louis Henry Denis Jadot, Maison Louis Jadot is a true institution in Burgundy, France. Extending over approximately 528 acres of vines spread across the most prestigious appellations, the estate stands out for its low-intervention philosophy, allowing each terroir to fully express itself. Owned by the American Kopf family since 1985, the house is now led by Thomas Seiter as president, alongside Thibault Gagey as managing director, perpetuating Burgundian excellence throughout the world.
The vineyard
Chambertin-Clos de Bèze is a historic terroir of the Côte de Nuits whose winegrowing origins date back to the year 630. The plot farmed by the estate stretches over just over an acre in the heart of Gevrey-Chambertin. East-facing on a moderate slope, the vines thrive on a mosaic of soils: fine, stony earth at higher elevations giving way to deeper red clay subsoils at the foot of the hillside, offering excellent water retention.
The vintage
The 2023 year delivered generous harvest volumes. After a growing cycle that was largely mild until early autumn, an extreme heatwave marked the end of August. These high temperatures, combined with timely rainfall, promoted optimal ripening of the berries, though they required a swift and concentrated harvest during September.
Winemaking and ageing
To craft this Chambertin-Clos de Bèze Grand Cru 2023, the grapes are destemmed before undergoing a long maceration of up to thirty days. Fermentation begins spontaneously thanks to indigenous yeasts, without aggressive temperature control. Malolactic fermentation takes place slowly in oak barrels. Ageing then continues for twelve to eighteen months in barrels made by the estate's own cooperage, with a moderate use of new oak to preserve the balance of the fruit. The wine is bottled unfined, with a light natural filtration.
