Appearance
A deep amber hue with profound coppery highlights, visually attesting to its generous maturation in first-fill sherry casks.

Nose
A rich and complex aromatic architecture. The sherry notes unfold indulgent aromas of raisins, dates, citrus fruits and dark chocolate, harmoniously intertwined with the sweetness of bourbon (vanilla, sweet toffee). The whole is subtly lifted by crushed black pepper and wrapped in an elegant peat smoke reminiscent of a wood fire.

Palate
Ample, creamy and silky. The attack reveals flavours of ripe apples, caramel and toasted malt. A beautiful spicy dynamic (black pepper, ginger, nutmeg) quickly comes to balance this sweetness, supported by a fine rustic peat and notes of charred oak. The finish is long, persistent and delicately dry, leaving a trail of dried fruits, black cherry and gentle smoke.

Pairings and tasting occasions

Its bold flavours pair wonderfully with grilled or barbecue-smoked meats, characterful cheeses (blue-veined or washed-rind) and lightly sweetened dark chocolate desserts such as a walnut brownie. To fully appreciate its complexity, it is best enjoyed neat, between 16 and 20 °C in a tulip-shaped or Glencairn glass. A few drops of water may be added sparingly to open up the nose.

Mixology

While it is first and foremost a great sipping spirit, its assertive character and gentle smoke work wonders in bold cocktails. It brings a complex dimension and remarkable structure to a smoked Old Fashioned, or to variations of the Manhattan and the Rob Roy.

Founded in 1898 in Forres, on the northern edge of the Speyside region, the Benromach distillery embodies an artisanal and historical vision of Scotch whisky. Acquired in the 1990s by the renowned merchant Gordon & MacPhail, its current owner, the distillery was relaunched with a clear philosophy: to revive the traditional style of pre-1960s Speyside whiskies, characterised by a light touch of peat. The production facility, manually operated by only four distillers, relies on 100% Scottish ingredients, a long double-yeast fermentation and distillation in copper stills paired with traditional worm tub condensers. This "made by hand" approach gives Benromach single malts an oily texture and a rustic identity that is authentic and deeply rooted in its terroir.
