Description

Characteristics and Tasting Notes for the Glenlivet 1978 44 Years Old Sherry Cask Antipodes

Tasting

Color

This Glenlivet 1978 44 Years Old Sherry Cask Antipodes reveals a magnificent topaz color with greenish highlights, a testament to 44 years of extended maturation in first-fill sherry casks. This rich amber coloring reflects the profound influence of sherry on this exceptional single malt.

Nose

The bouquet proves heady and concentrated, with remarkable aromatic richness. Intensely floral aromas dominate, with notes of dried flowers, iris, tuberose and carnation. Chocolate and fruit then emerge with orange and mango, accompanied by spices such as cinnamon and ginger. Honeys of lavender, violet, heather and linden lend an alluring sweetness, while medicinal touches of arnica and tiger balm mingle with saffron. Aromas of toasted hazelnut, fudge, milk chocolate and rum-soaked raisins round out this complex nose, enhanced by touches of fresh citrus zest.

Palate

The attack is clean and light. Vanilla and white flowers of lilac, lily of the valley and lily open the tasting, followed by a beautiful array of fresh fruit: pear, mirabelle plum, peach, fresh fig, lime, candied apricot, melon and mango. Licorice and fresh walnut provide structure and depth, while dried fruit, honey and spices offer a perfectly balanced sweetness.

Pairings and Tasting Moments

This exceptional whisky is best enjoyed neat, at room temperature, to fully appreciate its complexity. Its long, serene finish, with vanilla notes of custard and milk tart, accompanied by aromatic herbs (chamomile, verbena, rosemary, sage), malted barley, oak, gentian, leather, walnut husk, licorice and praline, makes it an ideal companion for moments of contemplation.

Mixology

This Glenlivet 1978 44 Years Old Sherry Cask Antipodes is an exceptional single malt best enjoyed without embellishment, in order to respect its unique character and the aromatic complexity developed over 44 years of maturation.

Other Characteristics

This unpeated single malt has an alcohol content of 48.5% and comes in a 70 cl bottle presented in an elegant wooden case. Distilled in 1978 and bottled 44 years later, it benefited from full maturation in first-fill sherry casks.

An Exceptionally Complex Speyside Single Malt After 44 Years of Maturation

This Glenlivet 1978 44 Years Old Sherry Cask Antipodes embodies the excellence of Speyside through an exceptional 44-year maturation. Distilled in 1978 at the first Scottish distillery to obtain an official license in 1824, this single malt was aged exclusively in first-fill sherry casks, giving this whisky its remarkable aromatic richness and depth. Presented in an elegant wooden case, this 70 cl bottle with an alcohol content of 48.5% attests to the ancestral know-how of The Glenlivet, founded by George Smith. The distillery, which obtained the exclusive right to call its whisky "THE" Glenlivet in 1884, now boasts 14 pairs of stills since 2018, perpetuating a tradition of excellence that has earned it worldwide renown.

Gordon & MacPhail: Pioneer of Independent Scottish Bottling

Founded in 1895 in Elgin by James Gordon and John Alexander MacPhail, Gordon & MacPhail established itself as a pioneer of independent Scottish bottling. A family business run by the Urquhart family since 1915, it revolutionized the market by launching the "Connoisseur's Choice" range in 1968, bringing Speyside single malts to an international audience. Owner of the Benromach distillery since 1993, Gordon & MacPhail holds world records with its exceptional bottlings, including an 80-year-old Glenlivet. Its mastery of extended aging and considerable stocks of rare whiskies make it an essential reference for connoisseurs.

A Limited Antipodes Edition of Absolute Rarity

The Glenlivet 1978 44 Years Old Sherry Cask Antipodes represents an exceptionally rare limited edition, selected and bottled by Gordon & MacPhail. This Speyside single malt was distilled in 1978 and patiently aged for 44 years in first-fill sherry casks, allowing the spirit to develop a remarkably complex aromatic palette. This extended maturation in sherry casks gives the whisky its richly fruity and woody profile, characteristic of Gordon & MacPhail's finest bottlings. The limited nature of this expression makes it a prized collector's item among discerning enthusiasts. Presented in a wooden case worthy of its status, this Glenlivet Antipodes perfectly illustrates Gordon & MacPhail's expertise in selecting and aging exceptional whiskies.
