Description

Characteristics and Tasting Tips for Octomore Edition 17.1

Tasting

Appearance
Matured for five years in first-fill bourbon casks and bottled without added colouring, Octomore 17.1 displays a natural hue, ranging from straw yellow to pale gold, the result of the compounds extracted from American oak over the course of maturation.

Nose
The nose surprises with its pastry-like, creamy dimension, with notes of vanilla milkshake, Scottish tablet and warm custard tart, extended by hints of pear drops and malt syrup. The smoke then unfolds in waves, dry and earthy, evoking smouldering oak and ash, while a bold salinity cuts through the sweetness and brings clarity to the whole.

Palate
The attack echoes the indulgent richness of the nose, with vanilla, tablet and pastry cream, enriched by the candied fruitiness of pear drops and malt syrup. The peat then builds gradually, in a succession of waves of dry smoke, oak and ash, never overwhelming the sweet body. The salinity continues to structure the whole, bringing tension and precision to a full-bodied palate, carried by a high strength close to cask strength, in a true study of controlled contradiction between power and sweetness.

Pairings and Tasting Occasions

Octomore 17.1 lends itself to contemplative sipping, best enjoyed neat or with a few drops of water to reveal more of the vanilla and fruit. It pairs naturally with smoked or grilled dishes, such as slow-smoked meat or a well-matured hard cheese, as well as with lightly sweetened desserts based on vanilla or caramelised pear. For a contrasting pairing, it can also accompany smoked oily fish, provided it is served in a small quantity to preserve the balance of the dish.

Mixology

Although primarily intended to be enjoyed neat, Octomore 17.1 can be used sparingly in mixology, as a rinse or a small finishing touch in classic cocktails such as the Penicillin, the Old Fashioned or the Manhattan, where its intense smoky signature punctuates the whole. Given its rarity and complexity, however, it is best enjoyed without embellishment in order to appreciate its full richness.

An extremely peated and surprisingly indulgent Islay Scotch single malt

Bruichladdich, the progressive distillery of the Hebrides

Founded in 1881 on the shores of Loch Indaal, in the Rhinns of Islay, the Bruichladdich distillery went through numerous closures before being relaunched in 2001, with respect for its Victorian architecture and equipment. Having become a benchmark for experimentation with barley, terroir and peat, it produces three ranges of Scotch whisky: Bruichladdich, Port Charlotte and Octomore, the latter claiming the highest peat levels on the market. Acquired in 2012 by Rémy Cointreau group, its current owner, the distillery now relies on renewed leadership, embodied in particular by Adam Hannett, appointed Master Blender in 2025, and stands out for its commitment to sustainability, having obtained B Corp certification in 2020, a first for a Scotch whisky distillery.

Octomore Edition 17.1: a peated whisky at the heart of the 17 series

Edition 17.1 Whisky is a peated single malt distilled exclusively from Concerto barley grown on the Scottish mainland, malted to a level of 81 ppm phenols. This choice of mainland raw material sets this edition apart from 17.3, crafted from Islay barley, and makes 17.1 the reference point of the Octomore 17 series, allowing the effects of terroir and cask type on the final profile to be compared.

Distilled on Islay and then matured entirely in first-fill bourbon casks for five years, with no additional finish, this peated single malt is bottled at 59.7%, a strength close to cask strength that preserves the intensity of the distillate. This "full-term" maturation in a single type of wood gives 17.1 a stylistic coherence that makes it the basis of comparison with the 17.2 edition, finished in port casks, and 17.3, more heavily peated at 132.1 ppm.

Presented as the most accessible entry in the series, in terms of both taste and price, Edition 17.1 illustrates the Octomore philosophy, summed up by the phrase "the impossible equation": combining extreme peat, an unapologetic youth of five years and a high strength with real aromatic elegance, fruity and pastry-like, inherited from the distillate style unique to Bruichladdich.
