Description

Characteristics and Tasting Tips for Hazelburn 10 Years Old by Springbank

Tasting

Appearance
The colour of Hazelburn 10 Years Old is typical of ten years' ageing in bourbon casks, without the darker hues generally associated with sherry cask maturation.

Nose
The nose of Hazelburn 10 Years Old opens with a soft, tropical bouquet of cooked pineapple, powdered lemon, honeycomb and dried orange peel. Notes of toffee-coated apples, fragrant pears and vanilla enrich this fruity dimension, while a perceptible minerality, at times accompanied by slightly metallic nuances, recalls the signature of the Springbank distillery.

Palate
On the palate, Hazelburn 10 Years Old reveals a meeting of sweetness and light salinity, with notes of green apple, a hint of green, vegetal freshness and a creamy, pastry-like texture. Citrus fruits, spices and a mineral, oily backbone characteristic of the Springbank house develop gradually, before giving way to touches of salted caramel, ginger and toasted coconut on the finish, which is long and mineral.

Pairings and Tasting Occasions
Master of Malt recommends Hazelburn 10 Years Old as an early-evening whisky, describing it as “relaxed and flavoursome”, ideal for a leisurely and flavourful tasting. It is best enjoyed neat, or with a drop of water, to fully appreciate the complexity of its aromatic profile.

Other Characteristics
Hazelburn 10 Years Old is an unpeated single malt, with peat virtually absent from the malt used in its production. It stands out for its triple distillation, a rare process in Scotland, which gives it exceptional lightness and a particular finesse. It is bottled at 46% ABV, without chill filtration, after ten years of maturation carried out entirely in bourbon casks.

A Non-Peated, Triple-Distilled Scotch Single Malt from Campbeltown

Springbank, a Family-Owned Independent Distillery in Campbeltown
Founded in 1828 on the site of a former illicit still in Campbeltown, Springbank is today one of the last independent family-owned distilleries in Scotland, still owned by the descendants of the Mitchell family through the company J&A Mitchell & Co. This Scotch whisky is produced in a one-of-a-kind distillery, the only one to carry out 100% of the production process on a single site: floor malting, mashing, long fermentation, distillation in direct-fired stills, maturation and bottling. Springbank crafts three distinct styles – Springbank, Longrow and Hazelburn – which illustrate its artisanal expertise and its loyalty to traditional methods that are rare in the industry. This family continuity and deep roots in Campbeltown give Springbank a strong identity and a reputation for excellence among single malt enthusiasts.

Hazelburn 10 Years Old, the Flagship Expression of the Hazelburn Style
Hazelburn 10 Years Old Whisky is presented by Springbank as the flagship single malt of the Hazelburn range, created in 1997 in tribute to a former Campbeltown distillery that has since disappeared. This unpeated single malt stands out for its triple distillation, carried out in the same stills as the Springbank and Longrow ranges, but according to a different scheme that produces a lighter, sweeter and more delicate distillate. The malted barley comes exclusively from the distillery's own malt floors, where the grain is steeped, then spread out and turned by hand, before being dried without any significant use of peat. After traditional mashing and a fermentation that can last up to 110 hours in larch wood washbacks, the resulting distillate is left to mature for ten full years in bourbon casks, lending notes of vanilla, caramel and light fruits. Bottled at 46% and without chill filtration, Hazelburn 10 Years Old retains the body and texture of the distillate while offering great aromatic finesse. Praised by the specialist press for its excellent value for money, it is a benchmark for discovering the Hazelburn style and, more broadly, the diversity of the Springbank distillery's expertise within the unique terroir of Campbeltown.
