A Speyside single malt with Caribbean influences

The Balvenie, an iconic distillery in Scotland’s Speyside

The The Balvenie distillery, located in Speyside, Scotland, is renowned for its artisanal know-how and traditional production methods. Founded in 1892, it stands out for its commitment to authenticity, with every stage of production managed in-house, from barley cultivation to bottling. Under the guidance of Malt Master David C. Stewart, The Balvenie has innovated by finishing some of its whiskies in special casks, adding a unique dimension to its single malts.

14 Year Old Caribbean Cask, a double-maturation innovation

Caribbean Cask 14 Year Old perfectly illustrates David C. Stewart MBE’s expertise in cask finishing. This single malt results from a meticulously orchestrated double maturation: after 14 years in American bourbon barrels, the whisky spends an additional 6 months in casks that previously held a blend of Caribbean rums from Barbados, Trinidad, and Jamaica. This innovative technique creates a harmonious marriage between the traditional characteristics of Scotch whisky and the tropical influences of rum, appealing to aficionados of both spirits. The rum used to season the casks is reused several times before being sold on, reflecting a thoughtful and sustainable approach to production.
