Description

A great Tuscan red wine that delights with finesse and aromatic expression

The estate

An unmissable name among the great wines of Tuscany located between Livourne and Grosseto, the Tenuta San Guido estate was created from the marriage between the Marquis Mario Incisa della Rocchetta and Clarice della Gherardesca. In 1942, Mario decided to plant Cabernet Sauvignon vines in Tuscany, creating Sassicaia a few years later. In 1983, Tenuta San Guido was the first estate in Italy to be granted its own appellation with the consecration of the D.O.C Bolgheri.

The wine

Guidalberto from Tenuta San Guido is a Tuscan wine that stems from a vineyard planted on a mosaic of soils rich in limestone, pebbles and clay. This terroir, placed at an altitude between 100 and 300 metres inclusive, faces south/southwest.

With this wine, Nicolò Incisa Della Rocchetta refers to his ancestor, Guidalberto della Gherardesca, a pioneer of modern agriculture who lived in Bolgheri in the early 19th century. Wishing to perpetuate the pioneering and innovative spirit of his family, Nicolò Incisa explains that he created this new cuvée in 2000 in order to experiment with the cultivation of Merlot, which had never been grown on the estate, but also to offer his customers a wine that could be enjoyed in its youth.

The vintage

A particularly cold winter preceded a spring marked by frosts which had an impact on the vineyard and yields. From mid-May onwards, the warmth and sunny days gave way to a normal June and then a very hot July. The rainy episode of August 16th was beneficial for the vineyard, ensuring optimal phenolic ripening until the harvest.

Winemaking and ageing

Manual harvesting. Manual sorting and meticulous selection on a sorting table. Destemming and slow pressing to bring about a gentle extraction of the tannins. Alcoholic fermentation in temperature-controlled stainless steel vats without the addition of external yeast. Maceration for 14 to 16 days depending on the grape variety. Malolactic fermentation in stainless steel vats. The wine is aged for 15 months in barrels (15% American oak), 40% new, 40% two-wine and 20% equal parts three and four-wine, and then aged for a further 3 months in bottle before being released on the market.

Blend

This Guidalberto 2021 from Tenuta San Guido is the result of a blend of Cabernet Sauvignon and Merlot.
