Decanter

A blend of mainly Tinto Fino with some Cabernet Sauvignon from the 2005, 2006 and 2007 vintages of Unico, this shows notes of fennel, liquorice and game with a background whiff of American oak char. Silkier and more seamlessly approachable in texture than the 2006 Unico, yet intense in its fruit richness and Burgundian-like, savoury finish.

Vinous

Josh Raynolds

(this 2017 release was made from a selection that totaled 59 barrels from 2003, 2004 and 2006) Vivid ruby-red. Ripe cherry, dark berries, cigar box, vanilla bean and incense on the deeply perfumed, expansive nose. Shows impressive weight and breadth on the palate, offering sappy blackberry, candied cherry and spicecake flavors complicated by hints of rose pastille, vanilla and liquorice. The smooth, strikingly long finish shows a seamless quality and repeating floral and dark berry notes that build as the wine opens up. While this wine has plenty going on right now, I've no doubt that it will enjoy a long, positive evolution as well.

Weinwisser

Deep, dark wine-red with a purple sheen, насыщ in the core. A broad, finely scented bouquet with intoxicatingly sweet fruit and terroir expression: dried fruits, rock-candy notes, sandalwood, freshly roasted coffee, and a hint of black truffle. On the palate, full of elegance, finesse, and power; softly radiant, smooth, plush tannins that melt over a rich extract; plum paste, noble woods, and an endless finish with Tempranillo rumtopf-like aromas and vanilla bean. World-class—an immortal Duero classic.

Description

Characteristics and Tasting Notes for the Unico Reserva Especial "Venta 2026" Non-Vintage Vega Sicilia

Tasting

Colour

With a deep garnet-cherry hue, this wine reflects full maturity and extended ageing.

Nose

The aromatic bouquet reveals remarkable complexity, with notes of mint, baking spices and Mediterranean herbs. These are joined by tertiary nuances of graphite, incense and subtle smoky touches. On aeration, the nose evolves towards aromas of ripe black fruit, dark plum and wild strawberry, accompanied by subtle notes of ashtray and fine cedarwood.

Palate

On the palate, this wine reveals a concentrated structure where flavours of blackberry and dark plum intertwine with notes of dark chocolate, liquorice, tobacco leaf and leather. The silky, refined texture reveals fine-grained tannins, melted and perfectly integrated. Umami nuances lend the whole a savoury depth. The remarkably long finish, exceeding a minute, lingers on impressions of graphite, dried herbs, toasted wood and subtle notes of Pu-erh tea.

Food and wine pairing

This exceptional wine pairs beautifully with generous red meats such as aged beef rib, roast rack of milk-fed lamb or furred game. It also complements truffle-based dishes, wild mushrooms or a board of matured Spanish cheeses such as Manchego.

Service and storage

The Unico Reserva Especial "Venta 2026" Non-Vintage is best enjoyed at a temperature of 18°C. Although ready to drink upon release, this wine boasts an exceptional ageing potential of up to around 60 years under optimal storage conditions (12–14°C with 60% relative humidity). Critics recommend a drinking window extending to around 2043, or even beyond.

Other characteristics

This wine has an alcohol content of 14.5% and a pH of 3.86.

An exceptional blend from Ribera del Duero, shaped by time

The estate

Founded in 1864 by Don Eloy Lecanda y Chaves in the Ribera del Duero region of Castile and León, Vega Sicilia is one of Spain's most prestigious wine estates. Acquired in 1982 by the Álvarez family, who remain its owners today, the estate covers 1,000 hectares, including 210 hectares of vines divided into 52 plots. Under the direction of Marta, Pablo and Emilio Álvarez Mezquíriz, and with Jessica Julmy as managing director since 2025, Vega Sicilia continues to uphold a philosophy of excellence based on traditional winemaking methods and exceptionally long ageing. The estate is renowned worldwide for wines of remarkable complexity and outstanding ageing potential.

The vineyard

The estate's vines are planted in the Duero valley, in Valbuena de Duero in the province of Valladolid, at the heart of the Ribera del Duero appellation. The vineyard benefits from an altitude of between 700 and 900 metres, creating continental climatic conditions marked by significant day-night temperature variations of up to 20–22°C. The soils show remarkable diversity, with nineteen different types identified, mainly clay-limestone with alluvial deposits in low-lying areas and chalky sandy soils at higher altitudes. The average age of the vines is 35 to 36 years, with some plots home to century-old vines. The vineyard is planted with 80% Tinto Fino (the local Tempranillo) and 20% Bordeaux varieties, notably Cabernet Sauvignon.

The blend

The Unico Reserva Especial "Venta 2026" Non-Vintage is the result of a blend of three exceptional vintages: 2011 (around 35%), 2012 (around 45%) and 2014 (around 20%). The 2011 and 2012 vintages, marked by warm conditions, bring concentration and power, while the cooler 2014 vintage lends elegance and freshness to the whole. This combination creates a harmonious balance that transcends the expression of each individual vintage.

Winemaking and ageing

The Unico Reserva Especial "Venta 2026" Non-Vintage is made according to the estate's traditional protocols. The grapes are destemmed and then fermented with indigenous yeasts in wooden vats at a controlled temperature not exceeding 28°C. Malolactic fermentation also takes place in wooden vats. The wines intended for this cuvée undergo a minimum of ten years' ageing between barrel and bottle before being selected for the blend. Ageing takes place in a combination of 225-litre barrels (French and American oak, both new and used) and 20,000-litre vats for around six years, followed by around four years of bottle ageing. This edition was bottled in May 2022.
