A Ribera del Duero True to the Founding Identity of Bodegas Protos
The Estate
Founded in 1927 in Peñafiel by eleven winegrowers, Bodegas Protos is the first structured bodega in the Ribera del Duero, in Castile and León. Its name, derived from the Greek word meaning "first", reflects this original vocation. Today a limited company, the house remains supported by a large community of more than 250 families connected to the vineyard, under the general management of Carlos Villar Bada and the technical direction of Marilena Bonilla. Protos combines historic underground galleries with a contemporary bodega, blending tradition and modernity.
The Vineyard
Protos '27 is crafted from old vines in the Ribera del Duero, on high-altitude plots that can exceed 800 metres. These vines, more than 50 years old, deliver naturally low yields that promote concentration and complexity in the grapes.
Vinification and Ageing
The Protos '27 2022 harvest is carried out by hand in small 20 kg crates. After a cold pre-fermentation maceration, alcoholic fermentation takes place at around 25°C in stainless steel tanks, using selected yeasts from the estate's own vineyards. A maceration of about 20 days, punctuated by several daily pump-overs, precedes at least 16 months of ageing in new French oak barrels, followed by a minimum of 12 months in bottle.
Grape Variety
Grenache, complemented by other grape varieties.
