The delicacy and structure of an exceptional champagne from Maison Pol Roger

The estate
Founded in 1849 by Pol Roger in Aÿ before settling in Épernay in 1851, this family-run Champagne house remains today under the direction of Hubert de Billy. Still independent and owned by the Pol-Roger and de Billy families, it has distinguished itself especially with its prestige cuvée Sir Winston Churchill created in 1975 and its dominant position on the British market since the 19th century.

The vineyard

Maison Pol Roger oversees an exceptional Champagne vineyard of 92 hectares, including the finest plots of the Montagne de Reims and the Côte des Blancs.

The cuvée

To mark its 175th anniversary, Pol Roger is offering a very limited selection of old vintages of its iconic cuvées. These bottles, disgorged at the original launch date, were then returned to the cellars for extended aging, remaining undisturbed until release. They are also distinguished by manual dressing, inspired by the original labels, and are presented in a wooden case.

This exceptional cuvée, created in 1975 as a tribute to the "old lion," comes exclusively from Grands Crus already in production during Winston Churchill's lifetime, spanning the three main Champagne wine regions: the Montagne de Reims, the Vallée de la Marne, and the Côte des Blancs.

The vintage

The 1999 harvest took place from September 19 to October 1 under contrasting weather conditions. Despite warm temperatures and slightly higher-than-average rainfall, no major weather events disrupted the harvest, except for a few isolated hailstorms. Heavy rain during the harvest doubled the usual rainfall, but allowed for an exceptional crop characterized by excellent health, large volume, and beautiful ripeness.

Winemaking and aging

Gentle and rapid pressing, followed by double settling carried out at the press and then in the winery at low temperature. Alcoholic fermentation takes place at low temperature in stainless steel tanks, with separate vinification of grape varieties and crus. After complete malolactic fermentation, the wine is bottled for secondary fermentation and aged 33 meters underground for 10 years before riddling and disgorgement. All bottles are riddled by hand before disgorgement and dosage. This Vinothèque edition stands out for its late disgorgement followed by a return to the cellar for additional aging.

Blend

Pinot Noir and Chardonnay in secret proportions.
