Decanter

A more commercial style marked by vanilla notes that seem to efface terroir. The palate is enjoyable enough, but the overall impression lacks vigour and focus. The new owners, just since this year, are promising much improvement, so stay tuned.

Weinwisser

Gorgeous bouquet of juicy blackberries, morello cherry juice and cassis drops. More delicate than rich. On the firm palate, supportive tannins and ripe cherry fruit on the aftertaste, with an elegant, fresh finish featuring elderberry.

Kunz barrel sample 17: fresh, fragrant bouquet, blackberries, cherries, cassis, tobacco. Elegant, brisk palate with a muscular structure, good fruit, fine sandy tannins, powerful aromatics, and a long, brisk finish.

Yves Beck

Garnet red with subtle violet highlights. A delicate, complex bouquet. I detect notes of licorice wood, black berries, and graphite. On the palate, the wine is slightly creamy and well balanced. Its structure provides pleasant freshness while the tannins have your back. A fruity, refreshing finish. A classic, characterful St-Estèphe.

Description

Château Tour de Pez 2016: a Saint-Estèphe with a lovely acidity

The Château Tour de Pez is a Cru bourgeois from the Saint-Estèphe appellation. The 30-hectare vineyard with vines averaging 35 years of age benefits from a terroir consisting of gravel soil and clay-limestone marl. The wine is aged in oak barrels (30% new) for 14 months, and clarified with egg whites. The Château Tour de Pez 2016 is made from a blend of 55% Merlot, 40% Cabernet Sauvignon and 5% Petit Verdot.

At tasting, Château Tour de Pez 2016 develops fruity scents (black cherry, blueberry) mixed with more floral notes (violet, iris). The palate is quite tense with a lovely acidity that is accompanied with crunchy tannins. There are also savoury spices and leather notes with a delightful finish. This Château Tour de Pez 2016 is best to consume between 2025 and 2035.
