Description
A silky wine from Napa Valley with beautiful aromatic intensity
The estate
The Dalla Valle Vineyard has its origins in 1982, when Naoko and Gustav Dalla Valle, from Japan and Italy respectively, settled in the winegrowing region of Oakville and quickly became aware of the potential of this Napa Valley wine terroir in California. Naoko was joined by her daughter, Maya, in 2017, an oenologist reputed for her experience at international estates, now at the head of the approximately 8-hectare estate.
Enjoying strong sunshine, the refreshing influence of breezes from San Pablo bay and excellent drainage, the Dalla Valle Vineyard, organically farmed since 2007 and using biodynamic agriculture since 2019, produces wines which are unanimously renowned for their delicious combination of character and complexity.
The vintage
Although Napa Valley was marked by several years of drought, the 2016 vintage was characterised by near-perfect conditions all throughout the crop cycle. The rainy spells in March and the beginning of April encouraged the cycle to begin. Dry and mild conditions in summer, marked by a short spike in heat, allowed for the grapes to properly develop and increase in ripeness, colour, aromatic intensity and natural acidity. The berries, harvested at full ripeness, gave deep, lively wines with a rare aromatic palette. 2016 was one of the best vintages of the decade.
Winemaking and ageing
Harvests were carried out on 19 September. Ageing lasts for 22 months in French oak barrels, 60% of which are new.
Blend
Dalla Valle Vineyards Collina 2016 is made from a blend of Cabernet Sauvignon (57%), Cabernet Franc (39%) and Petit Verdot (5%).
Tasting
Colour
Dense and wonderfully pure, the wine charms with its red, almost black colour.
Nose
The intense nose combines notes of incense, oven-baked blackberries and thyme with smoky notes.
Palate
The palate has a silky structure, seducing with its aromatic richness which is harmoniously combined with fruity aromas (black and exotic fruits), notes of black liquorice and sandalwood.
